re-decking this
*New upper deck going here-right now the first step is a killer.
*Bob, man, it's raining like hell here! Sam
*bob.. take it easy or you'll be finished with your deck before we finish mine...how's the hat trade commin ?
*Mike, I'm waiting for more pictures on your "OJT" post..... Sam
*Same here Sam, been doing so since the night before last. We get a respite for about 5 minutes every 4 or 5 hours. The rest of the time, it is just coming down in sheets.
*Luka, Yeah, the traffic on I-5 this morning was a real treat..... And not much better coming home. Supposed to clear up on Wed though..... Sam
*That's why they call it "Lesser Seattle" Guys, the rain is what keeps everything green (and moldy).Ok Mike, send me that address again, forgot about the hat.Bob
*Flashed and ready for ledger
*2 x 10 ledger and "Hangerman son"
*First days work
*Diagonal bracing takes out side to side motion, and gussets keep the beam from twisting.
*Diagonal bridging from post to beam eliminates some side to side motion and takes any bounce out of beam if you are at maximum span.
*Cuting 1" 45 degree ends on clear cedar posts. Now this makes some good smellin sawdust.
*3 1/2 days and upper deck is done
*Looking down at lower deck
*Rail
*Looking up from lower yard-" It's a jungle out there"
*Lower deck all framed 4th day
*This is one great little saw!
*Old stair jacks were laid out wrong &1/2-8" rise w/9-9 1/2" exposed tread because of overlap. tried to use the old stairs but they only used 1" bolts in the cleats and they failed.
*Adding one tread changed the rise to 6 3/4" making the stairs much easier to climb.
*Top of stairjack-"first cut"-6 3/4 rise X 11 1/2" tread off of snapped chalk line 2" below top of stairjack(width of framing square).
*Doing layout on 4x12 stairjack 6 3/4"rise X 11 1/2" tread off of chalk line.
*I mark the square so I don't have to wear my glasses to read the dang thing.
*Last cut-bottom-14" from the back side of stairjack
*Cleated stairs
*Lower deck and ramp
*32 yr old son looks 45 with all that grey hair.
*All done today- lights are next
*Thru the boo
*left side
*right side
*cleated 4x12 stairs
*Did they say anything about how much deck space they lost with the stairs extended like that ? It didn't seem like that much in the other pics, but it sure shows in this one. Most excelent job !!b : )
*No Luka- They had no problem with the lost space. The lower deck is just used as a landing and a conversation area. The upper deck will see the most use. There would have been no lost space if I could have built it all from scratch.I had to match an already existing ramp. Thanks for following along,Bob
*You really did do a great job on it. I saw that ramp, and kinda figured that was the case. I just wondered if they had complained about it after the fact. I hope this one has already gone into your resume.
*Really beautiful job. One detail I like is the design on the bench seat.
*Bob: Another classy deck. Do you ever do a simple one?
*Thank you! All, for the complements.Luka-I'll put one of these pictures on my website.Lisa- almost all of my benches are built like this.It is getting harder and harder to find the dark old growth wood for color contrast.Stan- there are too many other guys popping out the simple decks.I like to be a little more creative.
*Very nice job. I have to agree with Lisa on the benches...beautiful work.
*Bob: Just a thought on the darker old growth. That detail is so nice, if you were not able to find any darker old growth, would a staining for contrast be about as good? I show my wife Barb your decks and she loves those benches also. "Why didn't we do that?"
*Stan-Stain would only look good on the first application and very hard to re-apply in later years..over the years of cleaning and re-staining it would lose out to ultraviolet rays I'm afraid.I showed my wife Barb your stairs and she was in awe.
*Very nice job. I dont think my deck will ever get close to your quality and workmanship. It definitely gives some great ideas.sam
*You'll do fine Sam - If you can build a house like that you can definitely build a quality deck.Bob
*Pro-Dek, nice work ! A good friend of mine who swings a hammer, builds cabinets, and a host of other things for the U.W., had told me that my mother-in-law's deck (built by my brother-in-law) was in need of some triangulatiion. There is a lot of wiggle up there on that two story deck of her's. Your photos, expertise, and insights will come in handy so that I can loose my sea legs ! What do you treat your decks with if at all ? Thanks showing the work ! Richard
*Richard- Thanks! I personally use Superdeck stain because it cleans and re-applies evenly and can be applied with a Garden pump sprayer($20Gal).Pennifin thicker oil,is harder to apply, and costs twice as much @($40Gal).
