I’m considering building a two-story deck. I recently saw a kind of under-deck tray that supposedly keeps the rain from the upper deck to the lower. Is this necessary? I have also heard that 2nd story decks leave stains and drips on the house siding beneath…any truth to that?

When we do a second level deck first off is the ledger, its bolted to the rim joice,if the building has wood sideing we get under the last course and the door with flashing, if its stone or brick we cut into the mortor line and glue the flashing in , put in the frame with plywood on top, then my roofer puts on a torch down membrain roof with a cant strip along the edge of the building and under the door. Then we lay out 2x4 cca stringers 16'' on center and screw the decking to them, be sure and dont go through the stringers while fassening the decking, the stringers just float on the decking. Ive got them out 10 years old now, never a call back. John Hyatt deckmastersllc.com
