Hi,
I’m new here and a little nervous , but here goes….
I just built a sunroom onto the back of my one story ranch, and I’m ready to start roofing. well, almost. The addition created two valleys where the new room ties into the house. I’m going to start shingling from the valley outward on the new roof, with closed cut valleys. I’m a bit confused about the the best way to tie into the old roof. I know I have to remove “x” amount of shingles from the house roof to put down the valley underlayment. Should I just go ahead and remove more shingles and work back to the valley? or can I start at the valley and go out? Anyone ever done one of these? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
thanks

Remove enough shingles to get a layer of ice and water shield in the valley at least. If you want you can also use 90# in addition to the ice and water. Just remove enough existing material to get yourself between 12" and 18" through the valley with the new roof that will underlay the existing that you replace.
Do you mean 12 to 18 inches on each side of the valley? The ice/water guard I'm using is 36" wide which would give me 18 on each side of the valley. I'm assuming it's meant to be used full width? That part I understand, it's blending the new shingles into the old that I'm hung up on. Maybe I'm not explaining this properly.

You have the right idea as far as the removing(x) amount of shingles from existing roof. You will want to remove enough shingles to lay in your Ice shield at least 20" from each side of valley( this makes laying water shield a liite easier) More if you want. The important item is to remove the shingles at least two full shingles from valley, and work back towards valley on existing roof. Run tie in shingles at least up the new valley side 1 1/2 tabs past valley. If the butt joint of the shingle falls 4 " from (v) of valley the cut back shing to next Tab line. and carry on with full shingle.
As far as the new addition roof start so you end in valley this helps keep shingle line even with facia line (to much math other wise) And also you can step up shingle as close to valley and finnish cutting without walking all over new shingles.
Hope this helps
