A local siding contractor has told me he will not apply Tyvek (or similar products) under FC siding due to rot problems he has had, caused by moisture condensing behind the Tyvek. I’ve not heard of this before – I thought one advantage to using this type of product is its ability to ‘breath’. He claims the only way he will guarantee his installation is to use regular building paper.
I went to the Hardie website, but couldn’t find any comments about this – they just say to use a moisture barrier approved by national and local codes.
Anybody have any input on this?

We use "Grade D" tar paper behind all our siding. Double layer (comes this way on the roll) and more breathable than regular paper. Not all tar paper is the same. Grade D is the preferred paper behind stucco too.

Steve, Yeah, Grade D is what I was referring to when I used the term "building paper". I think that's what I'll use. Thanks
