Ultra thin down light retention springs destroy 3/8” ceiling drywall
Hi
I have tried to install an ultra thin led down light in a ceiling, but the spring retention system is destroying the 3/8” drywall when I remove for painting or adjusting the color temperature.
I have used the same lights on 5/8” and 1/2” new drywall with no problems, but the 3/8” drywall on this older house is crushed by the retention spring system when removing the light.
Does anyone have a suggestion?

Certainly! When installing ultra-thin LED downlights on 3/8" drywall in an older house, consider these tips:
Backer Support: Use a backing material like plywood to reinforce the drywall.
Drywall Anchors: Employ drywall anchors or toggle bolts for added support.
Spring Tension: Adjust the retention spring system to reduce tension.
Professional Advice: If needed, consult a professional for guidance on securing the fixtures without damaging the drywall.
Hi Asif,
Thanks for your reply. I did not have access to the attic, so I split a piece of wood in two (to fit through the ~6" hole) to mimic half of an electrical plate I have used on new work allowing room for to screw the wood down from below. Before that, I glued/stapled Trim Tex L-bead with a tear away to provide support more for the drywall as the retention springs came down when removing the light.
Worked like a charm - you don't know how many times some one can see the same color temperature before saying OK!
Thanks for your input!
