Many of the bigger whirlpool tubs have the option of being undermounted. A friend of mine just bought a $6,000 Kohler tub (the one where the water changes color and spills over the sides of the tub like an infinity-edge pool), and it can be undermounted. Unlike a sink, the tub isn't "hung" from the underside of anything- it's set in place and then tiled over.

I did one bath with an undermount tub. Cast iron from Waterworks, with a flat lip that was actually designed for drop-in but worked fine for undermount. I nailed on ledgers around the sides and back, the tub was set in place level on the recommended metal shims, and then I framed a short wall in front. A big granite slab went on that, and then the skirt and walls were tiled. We went to great lengths to protect the glaze because that puppy would be a disaster to remove.
