Our company is bidding on an addition to a residential home in Delaware County, PA. Part of the work will entail digging out under an existing 2-story 10′ x 10′ section of the home to extend the new addition’s basement under this area. This existing section (with wood floor joist) currently sits on a stone foundation over a crawl space. We will need to temporarily support this section while removing the stone work and footings, excavating the area below, and installing new footings/foundation walls.
Can anyone please offer some insight into where I can read up on techniques used for this type of work. We will be calling in masonry contractors for bids on footings and foundation work, but I’d like to know what is involved prior to any subcontractor discussions. Also, I’m aware that Engineering issues are involved, but right now I’d just like to read about the basic techniques used without any technical insight.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Ed,
It's the same procedure as jacking up the house/addition to move to another location.
Sometimes the house is too flimsy to jackup in the conventional way and you have to do small staggered sections at a time and fill in later.
Any house moving contractor would be able to give you bids and information on this type of work.
