well i guess everyone out there knows that you're not because your response was only three words long. union carpenters ( meaning: local brotherhood) can string together more than three words to make an educated response to a simple question.

      1. FastEddie1 | May 10, 2004 05:56am | #5

Maybe, but there's no words of more than two sylables in the sentence.Whenever you are asked if you can do a job, tell'em "Certainly, I can!"  Then get busy and find out how to do it.  T. Roosevelt

      2. DougU | May 10, 2004 06:25am | #6

Boy your going to go far comming in here the first day insulting the locals.

Sometimes three words is all it takes to say whats on ones mind.

And from your remarks to Jon I'm not sure the rest of the "brotherhood" will want to stand beside you.

Good luck with your inquiry though.

        UnionCarpy,

Sorry.........I see you are a relative "newbie" to this board.  Just like union members consider other members "family", it is so here too.  That comment was based on a recent, bordering on flaming sessions I've gotten into with some other posters here not to long ago.

Besides, it was late on a Sunday night. Mother's Day nonetheless, and I was tired, and just injecting a little humor in (and keeping your thread at the top of the board for you).

I think the carpenters union sucks as far as unions go.I joined back in 96 but only for 6 months . at that time 7 dollars an hour of my pay went to the union. plus monthly dues! and to top it off  there was not a lot of work for the union so I had no work but hey man you still have to pay your dues. well f that I have a family to feed and that takes president over the brotherhood. Ill find my own work thank you very much, and Ill keep the dues here at home

Now you have me curious, yes he is from chicago from what I read in a different thread, seeing as I'm moving there, wondering why you are asking.

        jonblakemore | May 11, 2004 01:37pm | #17

I grew up in Chicago. The union there is pretty strong, and the sentiment that unioncarpy expressed seemed to remind me of the Chicago guys I had know.

BTW, I did not respond to you post in the help wanted section as I've been gone for a couple of years, but I think Naperville would be a good choice for you. It has potential for a lot of growth (both #'s and $), but you could still get a house for a reasonable amount within commuting distance. I was born and raised in Geneva, which is NW of Naperville.

Sometimes I wish that I had never left.

        1. CAGIV | May 12, 2004 02:46am | #34

           Jon,

Did you find a lot of union carpenters doing residential remodels?

From what I've heard, the union isn't interested so much in that area, which is what I'm looking for, and really have no desire to join the union.

          1. User avater
            jonblakemore | May 12, 2004 05:31am | #38

My first thought was to say that I really never came in contact with many union guys in remodeling (or the very light framing that I was involved with) so I couldn't give you a good answer. Then I realized that my ignorance probably means the answer is no. I knew of one company in St. Charles that was a union remodeling outfit, but other than that I couldn't think of any remodeling by the brothers.

If I were you I would give them a look. Unioncarpy could set me straight, but I think union scale is $31 or so an hour with good benefits. That seems like a great deal to me. You might get in to build some capital and then go out on your own. I don't know much about the politics of the Chicago unions. I'm sure you have to play the game but to what extent I don't know.

            Jon Blakemore

          2. CAGIV | May 12, 2004 05:50am | #39

I didn't think there was much union involvement in res. remodeling in Chicago at least from what I have heard from those I know up there.

            thanks again.

and oh... were you the one to mention the 21" Vaughn flat bar in another thread?  If you were thanks for that also, I picked one up in depot today, and it worked great for pulling lap siding today.

it's my new favorite cheap tool, good thing they're not greedy, I could easily see paying 20 bucks for it and it still being worth it... the only downside is carrying the thing in my bags, it fits between the belt and tape holder, but man does it stick out a bit

I was a union carpenter. no more. not that its not a good idea. Theoretically.

There's too much abuse at the top. everyone who holds a union title expects you to kiss their a$$ to get work. Call that brotherhood? Not in my family!

Then if you dont wear a sandwich board for whatever liberal blowhard who accepts my dues in exchange for supporting porkbarrel union projects, they get a twist in their pantys.

Dont get me wrong, I met a lot of great guys in the union. All of them turn a deaf ear to abuse in the name of survival. Not me. I'm what you call ambitious. Not a nice word in the hood.

i was a union carpenter, and a pile driver, and millwright in both northern and southern california. i learned the trades through union apprenticeship as well as journeyman advancment classes in addition to the on the job learning we all get.

i am union no more after douglas mc carron took over the carpenters union and reorganized it to better suit his needs, did you know that he was on the board of directors of tutor-saliba as well as several other big companies in addition to being general president of the carpenters union?

just ask any member of pile drivers, carpenters, divers, bridge wharf and dock builders local # 34 that has been in the union more than 5 years what they think of being taken in to receivership by mc carron and no longer being able to directly elect their business agents or referendum vote on the contract that they work under, hell mc carron even withdrew from the afl-cio............. i could go on and on, try searching union local 34 on the web and see what you get if the subject interests you. the good things that organized labor once stood for are a far cry from what mc carron and his cronies represent today!

Don't need a union for work and never did.

    Don't need a pope, either.

    Nor a political party.

That said, I'm all for any apolitical party that can be put together.  I'll even bring extra beer.

    Just wondering....how old are you?

It has been my experience that unions are often very good for folks when they need them least.

I know a bunch of guys in one "brotherhood" or another who suddenly seem to find themselves without much backing as they get up there in age. Mid forties seems to be the time. Twenty years of paying dues and all of a sudden they`re not needed quite so much. About ten years outta retirement and forget it....someone a bit more cynical than myself might actually believe they were being forced out. My FIL was five years from retirement with full bennies....spent more time on the unemployment line and at the hall than actually doing the work he`d come to know as his livelyhood. Ended up taking a major benefits cut and retiring early. Lucky for him there`s plenty of non-union work out there to subsidise his income.

In my oh so humble opinion, unions are great for certain folks....others are quite capable of looking out for themselves.

BTW.....Jon used the abreviation "LOL".....actually makes his response five words long....perhaps an apology is in order.

    Sure wish I could be!

I like their retirement package (full retirement at age 55).

our local union has a extremely well funded retirement plan and good benefits package..

Great for owners too.. they agressively help owners get jobs and do a good job of marketing themselves.. I haven't heard too many complain about union dues  (oh! there will always be some who complain about anything but forget what they get for their buck)

Former member of International Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners Local 1926.  1984 thru 1986.  Now a member of United Steel Workers of America Local 347.

In my opinion the carpenter union isn't for me any longer.  In 1985 I was making $15.50 an hour as a foreman.  20 years later the local here pays around $17.00 an hour.  So much for COLA increases!  The medical benefits were almost nonexistent.  At the time our local and the AGC's were exclusively commercial.  Did lots of form setting and metal stud work.  Also alot of department store finish and fixture work.  Quit to become a Jarhead.

I was never in the union but I would like to thank them for the occasional Davis Bacon (prevailing wage) jobs that I have been on. Without them I don't know where else a guy could get $42 an hour as a carpenter around here.
