I recently finished out a playroom for my kids in the basement. Cheap Paneling and MDF bifold doors to go from finished side to unfinished side.
Doors were painted with Latex and have been in place for ~ 2 months.
There is a strange odor (smells like a peppery just cut MDF ) coming from the bi fold doors. I am not sure if it is outgassing or something else- like a reaction with the paint or something.
So far the smell has not faded and it really makes the room unusable.
I have thought of replacing the doors, but would rather eliminate the smell if I can since the doors had to be custom trimmed to fit a low headroom situation under a beam.
Any ideas of what the smell is (my hunch is offgassing)? How to eliminate? I thought about putting the doors outside in the sun for a week or so to see if I can bake it out.
The basment has normal basement humidity. No mold or excessive moisture, but it is a basement so the air is more damp than the upstairs.

Did you
put in new carpet?
seal the tops and bottoms of those doors?
Paint a coat of Kilz original primer on the doors. That will help cut the odor, but may not eliminate it. It's oil base, dont worry, latex will be OK with it.
Put the doors outside in the sun for a few days. If that doesn't do it, add a coat of oil paint.
