UPDATE: Photo Upload Limit Increased

MBerger | Posted in Photo Gallery on June 24, 2009 09:26am

Good news for all of you photo happy posters out here in the forums. Thanks to your (sometimes loud) suggestions we contacted our forums vendor, MZinga, and requested that they increase the lifetime photo upload limit for members. As many of you know it was recently slashed to 3MB.

MZinga met us somewhere in the middle of our request and has upped the lifetime limit per user to 100MB. The change should take effect immediately.

We apologize for the earlier inconvenience and appreciate your patience as we worked to resolve this!

    THANK YOU!

As an added note to picture posters ..... Try to reduce the file size (picture density, not the display dimensions) of your uploaded photos. The visual quality will look just as good on a computer screen and you will be able to store tons more pictures. With 100MB you'll be hard pressed to run out of space any time soon.

That's a good point PatchogPhil. If you have Photoshop Elements (or use the free online version) use the "save for web" feature, which reduces the size considerably without lowering the quality.

Matt,Thak you for the increased limit.Unfortunately BT may have lost the "Best Finish Carpenter", Stan Foster, as determined by a contest Dewalt hosted. Other regulars have also indicated frustration. Myself included. Hopefully Stan will return.Once again, thank you.Chuck S.live, work, build, ...better with wood

Thanks for the update, Matt. Maybe you can answer a question regarding photos. When I was told I had run out of photo space, I tried to delete some of my old ones buy clicking on "see old attachments". All the ones for Breaktime are listed tp-breaktime. The ones from Knots are listed three ways, fw-knotsnew, fw-knotsold, and fw-knots. The new and old seem to be duplicates of just plain fw-knots. If I try to open either the old or new, I'm told I have to be a member of the group and need a registration number. While I can delete the fw-knots, I can't delete the other duplicates.

Is there, or will there be, a way to clear out older photos and regain allotted space, if so, how do you do it. Before, when I deleted a post with pictures, it didn't give me any more space. Currently, it says I have the full allotted space. Maybe the existing photos, (my old attachments) were not counted in this new change over.

Photos are something most folks like. They can make explanations more clear than words. They're also just fun to look at. If 100MB is a "lifetime" allotment, we would want to be conservative about reusing the same photo in different threads and be aware of the size. Although my computer showed some of my photos well below the size allotment, I wasn't able to enter them in the recent contests for decks and finish carpentry, for example. The screen said they were too large. I'm aware that this was something apart from Knots or Breaktime.

What are the recommended sizes, dpi and MB, that will be large enough to be seen yet not waste unnecessary space. Is jpeg the best format? Is there a help or instruction page that addresses how to upload photos?

    Thanks,
    Hammer

You can't regain allotment by deleting old attachments.Once attached, they are a part of your allotment forever...you never know how deep a puddle is from the top......You are always welcome at Quittintime

    Hey Matt,

Thanks for taking care of that for us.

Communication on the range of subjects discussed here is certainly simplified and improved by adding photos.  Otherwise we'd have to learn to be serious and scholarly writers, like youse guys.

Thanks, Matt! I recognize that it gets tough swimmin' against the current and a  major thank you for your efforts.

I gotta say the pics are just about the most valuable, enjoyable, things on the site. "In Progress" threads from Grant, Sphere, Stan, Walter, et al, are well worth the admission and are always educational as well as entertaining. It's nice to look over the pics posted by the experts on this site and be able to ask follow-up questions. A HUGE benefit.

Also, FWIW, I note that my pie is reset to "0" used as of today, so we apparently get 100 Mb henceforth. Seems like a good compromise.

A suggestion to other posters: Most of us have learned to post by pasting from some other pic site, like Flikr. I for one intend to continue that practice generally, but use the "Attach Files" option on Mzinga for pics that I think should stick around in this forum for posterity, thus avoiding the dreaded "Red X" if/when the third-party site drops the pic.
