I recently shipped 40lbs of power tools halfway across the country for repairs at the authorized repair center.
UPS figured the shipping at a little over 40 dollars.
When they were shipped back the shipping charge for the same box I shipped plus another smaller box weighing around five lbs was sixteen dollars.
I realize UPS may give discounts to commercial accounts but I am curious if any of you know how to get better UPS shipping rates, ie open a commercial account, drop it off at the UPS depot, etc.
Thanks,
Karl

Fedex Ground is usually cheaper, and service is as good or better. I'm guessing around 20 percent average saving.
What works for us is an online business account (free) and credit card on file. Set the shipment up, print the mailing label and drop off at the Pack and Ship place. Fedex picks it up with their stuff.
Around Christmas, there's long lines. Walk in and drop off...no waiting. People look at you like you're cheating!
Everything will be okay in the end. If it's not okay, it's not the end.
USPS has a few boxes of a set size. These boxes cost "x" to ship no matter whats in them!
I have had nails shipped in these boxes, and they were heavy. Had light stuff to for the same price. Check these out at the post office.
Only thing I don't like is the speed things travel at with in the Post Office system. Can be VERY slow at times and they don't know where things are. UPS and Fedex can tell you when and where you stuff is.
