Usama in Havana?

| Posted in General Discussion on December 25, 2001 06:20am

So it looks like he shaved and slipped out of town — how unfortunate, right? Yeah, right.

What a golden opportunity to move the war on terrorism around here and there, wherever UBL seems to be. Did he sneak into the massive Hamas/Islamic Jihad terror camps in the Bekka valley? How about a boquet of daisy cutters for them? Is he back in Somalia? How about he’s hanging out in Havana? Wherever he goes, our war effort will follow, until somebody decides they don’t want this typhoid Mary as a house guest.

Tonight on CNN they showed photos of him, PhotoShop'd or something, w/out the beard and turban. Still looks evil to me. I have no idea where he is, but I don't know what purpose we serve to say we know, then we don't.

*How much does it really matter if we catch bin laden? Obviously it would be nice to. But we've basically destroyed his organization, cut off his funds, etc. Sort of "neutered" him, so to speak. Just took my head out of the sand to think out loud for a minute.................(-:

*NBC news last night mentioned that for all we know, he might be dead already and he will live in legend like Elvis. That's the problem with figures like him. People worship him, deify him and that makes it immpossible to really deal with the idea of him.Mary

*Convenient - a doctored, eh.... documented sighting of OBL at the next targeted terrorist haven. And so on until it becomes way too obvious.

*From his point of view I would have thought the best thing he could do would be to give himself up.Al Quaida seems to be self-contained cells so his leadership probably is no more than as a figurehead, therefore his surrender wouldn't damage the organisation too much.If he surrendered it would make it much more difficult for him to be executed --- and if executed anyway he would become a martyr to all his followers. If he's sentenced and kept in prison he'll be the focus of rescue attempts or hostage taking. He could make things really difficult!

*Ian,Excellent point. Also, if Osama is in custody, it would be more difficult to justify to the world further military activity.Rich Beckman
