Van seat/dash organizer

craigf | Posted in General Discussion on April 26, 2007 06:01am

I am procrastinating cleaning out the van.

Between the seats- alum. clipboard, loose leaf notebook, spiral notebooks, hats, gloves, dust masks, yesterdays mail that got lost in the jumble and the stuff that bounced out of dash.

Dash/cupholders/cubby hole/ashtray- earplugs, tape measures, pens, pencils, business cards, client’s keys and God knows what.

If the cops pulled me over, they wouldn’t search me. I would be too much work and a good sized dog could get lost in the junk between the seats.

Has anyone made a desk/organizer that fits between van seats? I figure I could use up some scraps I have around and kill two birds.

Get rid of the cup holder and put a roll of duct tape on the dash instead.

I have often lodged in their wigwams, and found them as warm as the best English houses." He adds that they were commonly carpeted and lined within with well-wrought embroidered mats, and were furnished with various utensils. The Indians had advanced so far as to regulate the effect of the wind by a mat suspended over the hole in the roof and moved by a string. Such a lodge was in the first instance constructed in a day or two at most, and taken down and put up in a few hours; and every family owned one, or its apartment in one.

Thanks for the link. Some good possibilities.

I have the big one http://www.americanvan.com/catalog/standard_dynamic_wrap.cfm?FamilyID=21 for between the seats of my GMC van.

2 complaints; 1) It's too tall, it's an awkward height for leaning on, and 2) It needs to be screwed to the floor - it's a Weeble.

Very good construction and handy but I'd go for the smaller version next time.

Appreciate the reply. I was leaning toward the tall one. Thanks for the info.

I'm 6'3. Is it too tall b/c you are shorter? Or would it be ok for me?

      1. VTNorm | Apr 27, 2007 05:10am | #8

Good question. I'm 5'10" and my elbow is at shoulder height if I use it as an arm rest. I have a full size GMC van and the console is (I think) 26" tall.

Sounds like it would work for me. I'll build a mock up. Thanks.

I have a between the seat file cabinet from Adrian Steel. It is an older style of the 12" for full size vans, but I have it mounted in my Chevy Astro. If the newer one is the same height as mine, it is just right for an arm rest. They supplied a clip board clamp and piece of clear plastic that is bolted on top, but I am going to take that off and put a piece of carpet on top. I don't use the clip board anyway. It also has a bracket that bolts to the floor, which allows you to take the cabinet out if needed, yet securely holds it in place the rest of the time.

All you guys with vans - make sure you are buying a bulkhead between seats and the tool compartment too, so when you have a wreck, the tools don't kill you twice.

I actually use a Bucket Boss organizer.  Lots of pockets for business cards, pencils, bandaids, car chargers, flashlight, hand cleaner, sunscreen, etc.  Clipboard fits in the bucket with some other stuff.  I could improve on it, but it was free and easy for now.

Hopefully the above link will take you to the van from Jim Tolpin's Toolbox book. I especially enjoyed this one for an old Dodge van. It combined great storage and the bulkhead protection that I needed.

Edit: it only takes you to the book. Search for A toolbox for the road and take the 5th one down. That should take you to the page with a picture of the front of the van.
