This is like the tenth time this has happened, I finish posting to someone, and notice my name has appeared twice. I backspace to remove the second one and my entire message is deleted with no way to recover it. Anybody else?

With the right approach, you can restore old hardware—whether through soaking, scrubbing, or polishing—giving it a fresh look while preserving its original charm.

I started a brand new thread the other day - Sunday it was - that vanished into cyberspace with no trail.

"...I started a brand new thread the other day....that vanished...with no trail..."
Piffin; That's really strange! I had a dream about that thread....but now I can't remember the dream....
Piffin,
Believe it or not, I made another post after my first cause that one vanished, but the first seems to have appeared. The second one now seems lost.
Jon
That almost makes sense but this is starting to sound like a movie - a bad one - from 1969.
Excellence is its own reward!
Piffin,
Just posted in the taven prior to posting to you, the message to you has appeared, but not my tavern post. What's going on?
Jon
I've found it's always handy to have something like a blank open Word document minimised in your task bar, if your using MS programmes, that is. Type up your response (or opening topic) in Word, spellcheck it, etc., and then highlight the text, hit ControlC to copy the text. Then go to the topic you want to respond to, open up the reply box, and hit ControlV, which pastes the text into the reply box, do a bit of checking, and post it. If it all goes pear shaped, and your response is lost in the ether so to speak, you can always go back to your Word document and copy and paste again.
Edit mode. I've also noticed that it can take five or ten minutes for your post to show up if you stay logged on, but it shows up immediately if you log out, and immediately log in again as a Guest-- I normally roam about as a Guest, unless I'm posting. Oh, and you just delete the text from your Word document and minimise it again ready for the next use, ha, ha. You can copy and paste the text of the post to which you are responding to into the Word doc., so that you can refer to it as you type. Just got to highlight and delete it prior to posting your response, unless you want to quote it. Slainte.

I always thought that I double clicked the Post Box when that happened to me the first dozen or so times.
I find it an excellent barometer for my interest on the topic, if I was still interested, I'd re-post.
The other point of the matter is: The only way you would know that your post vanished is, you went back to admire it.

Jon, I've found both the Backspace and Enter keys to be unpredictable here. Best to follow the directions of whomever suggested composing in Word or some such.
Turtleneck, I usu look at my posts for typos or to test links.
try writing it up in your word program or your email .... do all your spell checking and edit as need be, then just copy and paste in where ever you want, and you will always have it saved.

I discovered a real oddity the other day...
I typed up a response. Before I was finished, I decided that I needed to re-read something that had been said in another post in the same thread.
Went back to the main page, (open in another window.), and hit the button to open the thread again. Not thinking about the fact that it would reuse the window I was just using, to open the thread again. Effectively replacing the message I had just spent half an hour typing, thinking about, and editing.
AAAARRRGGHHH !!!
Hit the back button to go back to the edit page. Yup, message gone into limbo.
Oh well, done is done. Might as well hit the back button again, and re-read the thread, then start all over again. Back... and read.
Ok, ready to start again. No need to hit a reply button, just hit forward, and I will have the edit page again, without having to wait for it to load, right ?
Hit the forward button... and there was my previous reply, sitting there, waiting for me to finish. Happy accidental discovery.

Maybe you can explain this to me, all of a sudden last night, when I open internet explorer, my computer decides to try to install microsoft money, the install box comes up, ask for the CD and I have no idea why this happens?Never be afraid to try something new. Remember, amateurs built the ark, Professional build the Titanic.

CAG,
It's because Microsoft knows you're now done with final exams and will have more time to earn big bucks. They just want them to be the ones to help you manage it.

Well I have no idea what the heck caused it, but I un-installed the program and no more problem, I never used it anyway, just came with PC.

Your last 4 words were the answer I would have given.
: )
Do yourself a favor. Go through your whole computer, looking at the preferences, or options, or whatever each program calls it... and look for "auto-install" everywhere. Anywhere you find it, turn it off. Go a step further, and try to find an option to make the program ask for permission before installing anything.
The only exception I have given on my machine, is to the anti-virus program.
