I have been in the dry wall trade for about 8 years now, but I am not very familiar with the plaster trade. Recently a customer asked if I would do some veneer plastering at his 100 year old house in an attempt to match the original finish. Not one to back down from a challenge, I agreed to give it a try. I gathered all the on-line information I could, and everything available from the various gypsum manufacturers, but here’s the problem: While I am trying (yes, I’ve already started the job!) to follow manufacturer spews as close as possible, I’m still having difficulty with the smooth finish coat. The finish plaster/lime coat sets so quickly, I can hardly smooth it with the trowel, and spraying with water after it has been applied has little if any effect. The finish coat also has a lot of blisters that will not trowel out.
I am using the two-coat system (base coat and finish coat) from National Gypsum. If there is anyone familiar with this system, or plastering in general, please HELP! My customer will thank you!
