I just had a new central air installed and I was wondering just how high the vent is supposed to extend from the roof. I’m asking this because the installer connected the vent from the furnace to the old one which shoots out above the roof about 12″. Is this ok?

That varies,
Location, roof line, and many other factors affect vents.. What Applies in Minnesota may not be correct in Florida.
By vent, I assume you mean gas vent (or chimney). In Canada, the national code specifies the following minimums: (1) chimney should extend at least 3 feet above the roof it penetrates and (2) be at least 2 feet higher than any roof, wall, dormer, etc. within a 10 foot radius.
Up here we refer to it as the 3-2-10 rule for chimneys. Remember these are minimum rec's; some situations may need higher chimneys.
