Venting pyramidal hipped roof
How best to do this?
A 32×32 building will get a pyramidal hipped roof, and of course we mean that because it is square, there’s no ridge. Just a point.
Do the commonly used ridge vent products work on a hip with an 8:17 pitch? Is roofing it at all problematic?
Or are we best off just putting a nice louver-sided cupola up on the peak?

That might be a good candidate for an unvented roof.
Gene, in town here is a roof like you describe. They built a metal (copper) cone that acts as the central vent. Sits proud of the shingle a few inches. Bottom of cone maybe 4x4. Looks nice.

Calvin, thanks!
That seamed copper thing might be just what the doctor ordered.
Client won't spend the $ for a hot roof, all sprayed with urethane foam from the underside, even though the entire project will get this in walls and exterior soffits, plus under floors over crawlspaces.
There are some nice looking projects at that architect's website. I am familiar with the area the one Towpath (your link) is in, plus the Ottawa Hills area.

Duket/Porter is a talented firm.
The Towpath house is 7 blocks downriver. Intrigueing site, just above the last lock location nearing Audobon Island. One of the last buildable lots left in Maumee. It is just behind the Lamb House on E.Broadway. The Blade had a pictorial (more interior shots) a while back. Might find it in a search of the Toledo Blade site.
The layout of the attic area needs be conducive to picking up the venting along the perimeter. After that, the sq inches calculation will determine the size of cap I guess.A Great Place for Information, Comraderie, and a Sucker Punch.

Calvin, are you able to get us the manufacturer and product name for the lap siding used on the Towpath job?
It looks like a fibercement shingle siding to me. Perhaps Nichi.
I sure would appreciate the info if you can get it.

Gene, the best bet is to call Mike Ducat or contact him through their site. I think he would be very forthcoming with the information and answer any questions you might have. You can mention my name, he may remember it.
If that is a no go, let me know and I'll contact who I think built it.

Is that 17 a typo?
It can be done and works well from the venting aspect. 1/2" sheathing gets a little floppy when cut back from the hip rafter and I could see it being a leak source in high winds. I'd gravitate towards one central vent of some type, like the cupola or a large low profile vent on the least visible side or maybe four decorative vents - 1 on each face.

The 17 is because it is a hip. The main roof is 8:12. This is my guess.Bill

I believe that the mesh Cobra vent can be used on hip roofs. And of course you also see such roofs sprouting a bunch of cans.

Cupolas are a great invention, but you don't see them on houses here. Pretty common on barns though. So a cupola would be a design statement that really would look out of place except on certain traditional style houses.
