What is the best way to cut a vent hole for a bathroom exaust fan thru a tile roof. I am afraid of breaking the tiles, and cannot vent out to any other location.

Any ideas folks? I'd like to hear about this also.
Do it right, or do it twice.
A diamond blade in the 7 1/4 " sidewinder. don't break any of the tiles around you ,and use a lead boot to slide under the upper tile and cover the others around the hole.
Do you do the layout from the attic or the outside? I would think you would want to get the hole centered in a tile, rather than centered on a joint.
Do it right, or do it twice.
Yeah, you naturally want to miss the framing, but you're better off hitting the horizontal joint between the courses. That way you take a liitle off the top of the lower tile and a little off the bottom of the upper tile and your lead boot fits under the upper tile and over the lower tile.
Thanks to everybody for the info.
What I did was measure a lot to make sure that I could hit the top 1/2 of one tile . Then my lead boot will go under the next course and covers most of the cut tile. I guess that you could say that I did the layout from both top and bottom. You could remove the tile that you want the pipe to exit and drill a small hole with a bell hanger bit and than go into the attic and check how close to framing you are . It is then a matter of fine tuning your final cut.
Go get the Aug/Sept (#157) issue of Fine Homebuilding. It has a step-by-step article on installing a bathroom fan. It's still on the shelves in bookstores and in Home Depot and such. I'll be installing one myself using that as a guide a soon as I get a round tuit. Round tuits can be hard to find though : )

Do it when it's warm outside, when the shigles are nice and flexible.
Eat, drink and build stuff...
Do it when it's warm outside, when the shigles are nice and flexible. If it gets warm enough to make the tiles flexible, I don't want to be on the roof.Do it right, or do it twice.
If it gets that hot I don't want to be in the same state.

If it gets that hot ,forget that job, cause the house will not be there when you show up to do the job.
Hahahaha, agreed. See what you get trying to read and respond with a 2 year old on your lap. Read twice... Submit once...
