Just finished up some of the details on a kitchen project that I started way back.
Cabinets are made of vertical grain douglas fir, owner seen some in a hotel lobby and though it was for him, hard product to find though. The owner did all the design work, I personally would have done some of the details different but….
Countertops are CaesarStone, man made product made primarily of quartz. I cut the stone and installed it with our helper. It cuts easy and has some flexibility to it, not all that expensive compared to other solid surfaces.

really nice work doug
where did you get the top material? and it what sizes is it available?, how do you work with it?
caulking is not a piece of trim

Comes in something like 52 or 54" by 110" or 120", got it at a supplier here in Austin TX, Its heavy like any stone and I cut it with diamond wheel on worm drive with water cooling. Epoxy together like you would marble or granite. Borrowed a wet grinder(Flex) to clean up the edges, it grinds easy, use 50 to about 1500 or 3000 stone grinding pads.
If the owner had wanted some sort of routered edge I would not have been able to do it, strait edge broken slightly was a piece of cake.

Beauty Doug- I love working with VGDF- did a bunch of Soji screens & asst other japanese style goodies with it back in the mid 80's.
Does that Ceaser stone tool like solid surface material? what type of glue?
thanks,

The CaesarStone is made of quartz(main ingrediant) so its like cutting stone or marble, but it is very consistant, no hard or soft. You can see when you pick up on it that it does flex some, something granite or marble doesnt do to well. I just epoxyed the joints.
Doug,
Nice work. I really like the look of the countertop. DanT
Beautiful Doug! Different style than I'm used to seeing from you.
Clean lines all the way to the floor - Masterful. Darkening those toe kicks would float those cabinets nicely but I like the monotone VGDF there too. You can never have too much wood!

Boy you typed a page full there!
Wait till next week when I post the pics of the RED kitchen that I'm finishing up. Try to find some sun glasses, you'll need them.
I'm convinced that I'm not going to get to do the kind of work that I know best down here.
Seems to be a lot of this Mid Century look going on. I havnt seen much crown on cabintry since I got here.
I agree with you about the dark toe kick, cant seem to sell that to anybody though. This guy desings computer chips so therfore he's quite capable of designing cabinety! So he thinks. When I try to get some details out of him he just says those are details, we will work them out in the end. He doesnt get it! Oh well job is done, hes happy so I guess thats all that matters.

I read the title to the thread, and I wondered: if MDF is medium density fiberboard, wouldn't VGDF be very good density fiberboard? I guess not.
Great pics, though!
Ooooh, I want one......
Nice work.....You ought to post these over in CT.......
Pi
Thanks and whats CT?

Doug, what supports the stone where it cantilevers?
david
nothing, cants out about 10 11 inches, the owner doesnt want any support showing. This stuff isnt as ridgid as natural stone, has I think 10 times the flex of natural stone. I dont say that thats going to prevent it from breaking but.....
Doug
Nice looking work.....
