Vindication – Using screws in metal connectors

Remember all of our fun going back and forth about using screws in construction? Remember everyone who said you couldn’t use a screw in a metal connector? Simpson now has a line of screws for their connectors. WHO HOO! http://www.strongtie.com/products/connectors/screws-loadrated.asp#connectors My favorite quote on that page: “The single-fastener load capacity of the SD9 exceeds the capacity of a 10d common nail, while the single-fastener load capacity of the SD10 exceeds that of the 16d common nail”

Well, that's been a long time
Well, that's been a long time coming. There are definitely times when a screw is easier and/or more effective than a nail in a hanger. Wonder what a Simpson screw is going to cost?

Whatever the market will bear. They will be propriotery. no doubt.
I think the complaint was drywall screws in a Simpson clip.
Nope, it was a blanket "can't
Nope, it was a blanket "can't be done" with any screw, unless it was those Simpson 1/4" suckers.
All most people know about wood screws are #8 size, which is good for decking and sheathing, but not much else. The shanks is too thin.
They've had those for several
They've had those for several years now. Simpson's always ready to make a buck. The main bad thing about them (other than cost) is that they have such large heads, making them unfit for hiding behind a layer of drywall.
The current issue of JLC had an ad for them, that was the first I saw of them. Are you thinking of those tiny wafer head or big 1/4" screws? This was the first times I've seen the SD line.
All I know is that I've seen
All I know is that I've seen boxes of Simpson hanger screws at HD for a couple-three years now. Never used any.
Are these the screws you've
Are these the screws you've been seeing, or something else?
Dunno -- the ones I saw were in Simpson boxes like their nails, IIRC.
You are right, Simpson has had them out for years
Ever see people use a hammer to drive in those 1/4" Simpson screws on hold downs? Thats got to do something to the pullout strength.
I was just at my local building supplier (Ganahls), who carries just about everything Simpson makes, and it was so new they didn't have it in yet. I just special ordered a box of each different size just to check them out and compare them to what I've been using.
I also saw a display for the SDS 1/4" screws, which came in about 10 different varieties and packaging, I think this is what DanH was thinking of.
They have their own proprietary screw. You can't use just any screw that suits your whim
Really? Do I have to use their proprietary nails too?
Of course you can't just use any nail either. I know you guys favor putting up connector hardware with drywall nails, but that has to stop! ;)
Nah, roofing nails.
