I want to polish the all brass instrument and would like to know the best way to get a bright finish. My idea is to use muratic acid (I’m a little impatient) but I think this may create other problems. It has a compass that works and everything else seems to be okay. Like to hear from anyone who know how to polish this instrument. Best Regards: Dale

The most common way to make your own parging mix is to use either Type S mortar for block or Type N for brick and add a concrete bonding additive.

Dale: Don't be an instant gratification American. Muriaic acid is corrosive.
Get some metal polish containing a urea compound. Cleans instantly and does not corrode. Tarnishield is its name, I think. It's a silver anti tarnish cleaner. It's relatively mild material- can be used bare-hands if you are not allergic to it. Can be put on w/ a cotton ball. Only has to be rinsed off w/ clean water.

*At first I would say Brasso (brass polish) but my wife used to use a brass polish on her bed that was "soaked" in cotton fiber wherein you would tear off the size piece you needed and just rub away and then buff with a seperate cloth. The shine was great and it was long lasting. Stuff can in about a 16 oz size can - she just brought me the can - its called Cape Cod Metal Polishing Cloths mfg by the Cape Cod Polish Co., Inc., Dennis, MA. Their number is 508-385-5099. You will not be disappointed. Here is their web site - evidently it is now made in Canada. http://www.capecodpolish.ca/index.ihtml
*The creams and liquids (Brasso included) will get into corners and cracks and be hard to remove. A product like that Eric describes is called Nevr-Dull, and it can be found at most any hardware store. Certainly at any marine supply.
