I want to hear your opinions about vinyl bead.
I hate the stuff!!! I can’t see how it holds up especially in a commercial application.
My brothers having his new office built, I’m doing the millwork and I notice the GC used vinyl bead. My bro asked me if it was any good, I said no, watch i will demonstrate I grad the bottom edge And in oneswipe I pull the whole 10 ft piece off. His eyes popped out of his head and you should have seen the look on the supers face. I said ” Need I say more” Hello, spray on bead or metal bead with nails. Does not take a rocket scientist to figure it out.
Just venting,
Lou

Nice of you to look out for your brother that way...
OTOH, I am assuming you were hired by the GC? If so, being a superintendent myself, if it were my job, you would be outathere. If you do remain on the job I wouldn't exactly say you have set yourself up for a pleasent work environment...
Matt, I'm tired of people not keeping to the blue print specs. The job spec out metal bead, and the sub took the easy way out!!!! I don't care about the work environment. The GC at the signing table said it was ok and they will take out the quote for the millwork. Were talking big $$$ for millwork. My theory is as the twig bends so grows the tree. Tought doo doo. Tear the vinyl off replace it with metal and be done with it. Its a 2.6 mil job. He's paying the tab so give him what he wants.

If the job spec called for metal bead that is what he should get.
I do not know how the bead you easily yanked off was installed - does not sound quite right.
I have used vinyl corner beads with good success especially in bathrooms. Vinyl bead + SS staples = no rust - ever.
Installation method I use: spray vinyl adhesive on back of bead and wall corner, position bead, staple with 1/2" SS staples (mostly holds the bead while the glue dries). Coat with setting type compound for first coat - work compound into holes - more bonding surface than metal.
Vinyl will usually survive a hit without denting - eventually it will break, but the metal beads would have dented and probably cracked at the bead edges also.
I'm not sure what "in use" scenario would produce the direction of force you applied.
If I can get my fingers behind your millwork - I'm pretty sure I could pull it off the wall also - that does not necessarily mean the installation or material was of poor quality. It just means the material was not fastened to resist those forces in the direction applied.

Never underestimate the value of a sharp pencil or good light.
I work for a commercial drywall shop. We use tape on bead (never glued it with 3M like I've heard here). Haven't used nail on bead in over a decade, even over wood. We only use a vinyl flex product in an arched situation and we staple it.
If the vinyl is installed corectly, what force is gonna make it peel away as you did, tape on bead demos the same way. If someone biffs their mail cart into a corner, its gonna be damaged no matter what it is. That is what corner guards are for.
I tend to agree with Matt.

Trust in God, but row away from the rocks.
You are so lucky that the contract calls for metal. If vinyl were allowed in the contract and you pulled that stunt to show your displeasure with vinyl on one of my jobs, you would be facing a substantial backcharge for repairs.

Not to pick nits with you....but when will the opportunity to grab the corner bead from either the top or bottom edge, and rip it off of the wall come into play once the job is complete?
Doesn't take much to dent metal corners. And once they're dented, you can't just straighten them out and touch them up. Vinyl corners, on the otherhand do not dent. Nor do they rust.

I do not think Lou is getting the responses and support he had hoped for here!

JdR, Come on and be with me on this one!!! Man I'm installing 3 piece base on this job all the outside corners on the bottom are cracking ( an easy 40 out of 50). That would not happen(as easy) if it was metal bead. Notice I had to say as easy!! Cause you guys are such a pain in my Ars!!! Vinyl bead blows!!!!
-Lou
The crimper blows too!!!
Very surprised to hear of cracking.
Perhaps it was just a pizz poor installation.

Last union job i was on we used metal, They made us use a bang on crimper thingamajig instead of nails, said it saved time, but we sneaked nails in when he was not looking anyway, Seen some new stuff not sure what there would be to grab a hold of to pull, Was it mudded already???
something I saw in hospital work was taping the cornerbead. They would instal as usual but tape the joint so it was more durable.
Maybe you could tape vinyl and have the best of both?
