I will be installing vinyl fascia on a new house that already has aluminum drip edge. My question is… can I depend on the drip edge to secure the top of the vinyl fascia? The drip edge is very tight to the facia, so it looks like it would hold.
If this is not a good idea, what would be a recommended method of securing the top of the fascia panel? There is not enough room under the drip edge to mount any type of starter strip, etc.
Thanks.

you have never done this before eh?
you wont be happy with the results
how do you figure on securing the facia to the facia board so it wont wrinkle when the sun hits it?
take some time and look at some siding sites to see whats recomended then take it back to home depot and at least get some aluminum
I've never seen vinyl facia before. Is it common in your area or is it just coming out?
We still use aluminum facia with vinyl soffit around here. And we slide the aluminum under the drip edge and it holds very well.
On eaves the gutters will help keep the facia from going anywhere also. And on the gables sometimes we will put a few trim nails though the drip edge into the facia.
nah the way to do that so it doesnt wrinkle is....
take a trim nail poke it up through the bottom of the aluminum facia wiggle it around a bit to give the metal room to expand and contract then just snug it up to the subfacia
of course the top goes under the drip edge and if you made your facia the right size everything will stay and look goodDue to recent budget cuts the light at the end of the tunnel will be turned off until further notice.
That is how we do it too. I didn't even think to write that part because I thought everyone did it that way. I guess i'm not really a good explainer.
Nailing it through the drip is just what we do in high wind areas.
i dont splain things too good either lol
lots easier to show you what i mean than tell ya lol

I'm in the mid-west and I agree 100%. Most of the time we don't use upper nailing at all, especially in vinyl!
Thanks for the information! So it is common to simply slide the vinyl fascia panel under the drip edge? Sounds like I can safely depend on the aluminum drip edge to secure the top of the fascia board. My fascia is only 4 inches tall, by the way. I'm not sure if this is important or not.
By the way, the bottom of the fascia snaps onto the soffett J-channel. This allows the fascia to move when needed.
Can you send some close up shots of this vinyl facia after it's up? Why did you decide to use vinyl instead of aluminum?
I would be worried about pieces blowing off if it's just locked into the J channel. But maybe it's a really good lock.
I chose to use vinyl because the entire house will be vinyl, for maintenance reasons. Plus, I have no provisions for working with aluminum. Vinyl doesn't require special tools.
The snap fit to the J-channel is very tight. It wraps completely around the J-channel.
