At our beach house, I went with Vinyl, as the salt air down there can brutalize steel...coating or no coating. The only problem so far I've noticed with our 16' X 7' door is that it sags a bit when opened...even with the metal strongbacks on each section. Vinyl just has no tensional strength. However, it's maintenance free...in fact, the installer said the warranty is void if we paint or treat the vinyl with anything other than their coating (a sort of wax)...which I haven't done.

sounds like vinyl is preferred. steel looks nice but i can picture my kids denting the crud out of it. I dont have a large door though so sagging wont be a prob.
