I just purchased a 30 year old house sheathed in the old 4×8 reverse board and batten style siding. I am not real fond of vinyl but it seems to be the way everyone is going… This is a frame house so I would like to skin it in Tyvek or something similar. Any opinions?

To prevent moisture buildup and improve performance, install a continuous air barrier—such as drywall or specialized membranes—under tongue-and-groove boards or other interior wall paneling.

See the thread on fibercement vs. vinyl. It sounds like you are talking about T1-11 siding. Fibercement will go right over that (with tarpaper underlay or one of those other types) with no problem.
This siding is similar to T-111 except the groove spacing is wider (8" vice 4"). I agree FC will go over with an underlayment but I would be afraid of buckling if the wood wasn't perfectly tight and sound. I really haven't been impressed with vinyl at all though so this appears to be the way to go. Thanks for the input...
Second the motion on fiber cement!
Is there a difference in the ease of installation? I know w/ FC, you are supposed to nail directly into the framing, not just the sheathing.
There are people FAR more knowlegable that I on this topic - I was kind of shooting from the hip as an old house lover who is 'allergic' to vinyl -
I was also giving your post a little bump to keep it alive until one of those guys (a gender inclusive term!) sees it.
Will check with you later *>)
