Vinyl siding detail?

FCOH | Posted in Construction Techniques on March 20, 2009 08:59am

We are soon to start siding on our latest project.  I have been doing alot of research and decided to go with vinyl throughout.

I would like to use a PVC product on the bottom, covering the rim joist, with a cap on that and then start the vinyl from there up to give a nice look of white trim around the whole building with the vinyl fill to be a darker grey.

My question is the detail on the bottom where the vinyl meets the PVC.  I saw a detail somewhere, I thought it was on here from Mike Smith but I cant find it, where there is some sort of starter strip installed on top of the PVC bottom trim that locks the vinyl to keep water from getting behind.

If anyone knows what Im talking about and/or has a link it would be greatly appreciated.  Any other comments/questions are welcome as well.

Thanks

I figured I'd send you one directly.  Have you done this?  If so what product did you use and where did you get it?

    Thanks

Why can't you just use a strip of PVC material for your band, cap that with white z flashing to keep water from getting behind it, then use starter strip as normal for the vinyl siding?

I could but I liked the look of the bottom band with a little ledge on the top.The system I saw a picture of looked pretty sharp. Not sure how it works in the corners though.

Why not just install a PVC water table, flash with "Z" flashing, install an Azek drip cap, and install the vinyl on top of the drip cap?View Image

Are you sure it was RFH Ranch?

Because I just looked through the whole thread (it's late, I must be bored) and the closest thing I could find (92880.194) is this:View ImageMaybe I'm not understanding what FCOH is looking for.

I'm glad U searched, I was gonna ask Mike if he only posted pic's once and that was it!

I thought of your solution and was curious what Mike came up with.

(didn't actually thunk it all the way thru to the drip edge, that's a nice extra detail)

and if I'm thinking this right ... he could skip all the extras ... and have a Z with a starter strip hem custom bent in?

After and exhaustive search this is what I had seen.

          The link is http://www.coastalcontractor.net/article/74.html

Is this just a starter strip over the azek shelf?

There is flashing that goes on behind and under the shelf.

Heres a window detail too.  Looks like a 2 step procedure to wrap the window. Nicely done.

I was told that to get the wrapped look I could nail 2x around the window and wrap that with aluminum. Dont really want to do that.  Next option was to install "lineal" around the window.  Sounds like what Im lookin for so I think Ill go with that.  What is it called what he's doing around that window?

            Forgot the window detail

View ImageThat's lineal (looks like 3-1/2") with a lineal starter strip.

I know Certainteed has this system and I'm sure others do.

View ImageI'm pretty sure that is just normal starter strip.
