Is it necessary / worth the time to remove painted wooden siding prior to installing vinyl on a unattached, uninsulated garage in the upper mid west? I had considered hanging the vinyl on furring strips. The structure is sheathed with what appears to be foil-backed gypsum, although could this be inner and outer layers of sheathing (foil faces the interior)?

Typical installation is half-inch foil-faced RFBI over the current siding. Gives a somewhat smooth plane to work off of, along with a tad (though compromised) more R-value...even though you're not concerned due to the structure being unheated. Then nail your vinyl right over the RFBI.
You could just use furring strips...though I'm not sure if that could possibly lead to a wavy-looking installation when summer comes around. Minimal spacing of the furring (12"?) could be a factor...though furring spacing also depends on the nailing schedule that the siding manufacturere calls for.
No way would I advocate going to the trouble of removing the existing siding. With the amount of blown rain that vinyl can let through, you need something to keep the structure's contents dry.
*You just go ahead and side right over the wood siding. Don't remove it. Using foamboard makes for a nice smooth underlayment to keep things straight. Although you can side directly over some wood siding if you know what you are doing.Pete
*Mongo, I've installed alot of vinyl over the years. You can go directly over the wood. But where you run into trouble is when your nailing hem lines up with the bottom of the lap of the siding. You end up using at least a 2-1/2" nail, instead of 1-1/4 or 1-1/2, and it becomes difficult to lock your siding up because the bottom piece wants to slide back to the wall. On one job I did, the job looked good but when it got real windy, the siding "rattled" on the wall. You really should use either 1/2" insulation sheathing,or fan fold. The best thing you could do is rip off the old siding, install 1/2" or 1" iso board. You will get the best results.
