How about this for a cathredral ceiling. Starting from inside …sheetrock-1.5″ airspace- reflectix(aluminized bubble wrap, perms .03)-R 30 FG batts- vented airspace(soffit to peak)- 5/8 ply 30 lb felt comp shingles. This is on the Oregon coast so it is cool most of the time. During the summer it is usually 62 degrees so cooling isnt an issue. The reflectix can be had for about 25 cents a sq ft. I think it would be worthwhile as a vapor barrier and added insulation.

Out west we have a ton of cathedral ceilings and without a doubt the best method of insulation is sprayed in foam. No air leakage, no vapor barrier, increased r-value over fiberglass, and you'll seem younger, smarter and better looking to your friends.
