It’s fair time in Plymouth county Iowa.
Cost is $25 a car load. Buy a sticker and it’ good for all 5 days of the fair.
Here we are going in the back gate.
If you want to drop off a car load of kids and then go home then just do a u-turn and head back home until the evening that’s okay.
We got there about 6:30 and the parking lot was almost full. The Catholic school booster club directs the parking.
Leave the keys in the van and the doors unlocked. Some one from the family might need to get something out of the van.
We are approaching the back side of the grandstands. The county equipment, road graders, bulldozers and front end loaders are all here to help with the grounds of the grand stands.
County workers will be manning the equipment on their own time.
Tonight is the tuff truck contest.
Any 20 year old with a old truck and some gaudy paint can enter. It’s kind of like motocross with pickups. Ther is usually a bonzai jump at the end of the course into a pond of water.
Mr Muff (my mechanic) will be MC tonight. He knows every 2 bit shade tree mechanic and motor head in the county and he is a hoot.
Muff will probably MC the tractor pull on Friday night too.

I post this because some of you guys in the city can't have fun like this in your back yard.
Right after this picture was taken this truck missed a curve (bad brakes?) and he jumped over the embankment. He barreled toward a line of waiting tuff trucks.
People scattered and he gently slammed into a waiting tuff truck.
His buddies got some sledgehammers out and in minutes he was ready to go.
Now we are headed to Pork Producers pork chop stand underneath the grandstands.
The sell "chop in a glove" ( a grilled porkchop in a garden glove, no need for a plate or napkin) and a pork loin snadwich.
View Image
You can see the bank runs a trolley (3) around the fair grounds. You can also see the beef barn in the background.
Thursday night is the Tuff Truck contest at the grandstand, so the grounds have to be contoured by the county guys.
Friday night is the tractor pull, so now we need it flat
Saturday night is the big one, the Demolition Derby. You had better get there about 90 minutes early or you won't get a seat. For this we need embankments about 5-6 ft high.
They close the "gate" with some logs cahined to a front end loader. Ususally some implement dealers lend some equipment to haul out the dead cars.
And Sunday night is a close 2nd with the Rodeo.

I'm confused.
I cut and pasted from Picasa web album.
That is alot faster way to do it.
After cutting and pasting then the next picture was always the blue color of being highlighted.
Usually if i would drag across it and click then it would clear and then I would HL and cut.
Somewhere in the middle I stopped clearing for a few pics and it would still paste.
The I returned to clearing the picture and then cut and paste.
I have one picture near the end that is off to the side and underneath. I don't know how that happened, but I am going to leave it because it appears to be a repeat.

This tractor is a Ferguson TO-33 from the 1950s - Predecessor to my MF 35.
It's been called "The most copied tractor in the world". Most modern tractors have the same features it did. They've just been updated a bit.

Boss
Thanks for the info.
It just struck me as a beautiful tractor. And clean.

Like what features?
Rich
The 3 point hitch was a major step forward in tractors. Harry Ferguson invented it, and it's now copied on all tractor brands worldwide. I believe the Ferguson tractors were the first to have any sort of load sensing for the implements. i.e. When the implement (like a plow) pulled too hard the tractor would lift it up a hair.Ferguson made a major switch from heavy tractors to more lightweight ones. By way of an example - The steam engine we have at the historical society is 20 HP and weighs 26,000#. That TO-35 is about 30 HP and weighs about 3,300#. I believe that particular Ferguson transmission had an unheard of 6 forward speeds. Prior to that it wasn't unusual for tractors to have 4 or less. (The steam engine I mentioned only had one).BTW - No doubt modern tractors ARE better. They have better engines, better transmissions, and MUCH better hydraulics. But those are all just improvements - Not new inventions.
Some days the only good things on TV are the vase and clock.
Boss
Thanks for the insights.
I was guessing the 3 point hitch, but I didn't know.

Rich,Thanx for taking the time to do this wonderful thread. As a kid we would go to the Montgomery County MD fair in the late 50s and early 60's. The fair was located in a rural setting. MC was abot 80% AG then.In the 80's it was smack dab in the middle of cement, clay and glass. (Gaithersburg MD) Still had the 4H pavillions. I used to back up T3 (1979 F350 Camper Special Supercab 4x4) on the hill overlooking the tractor pulls. We would sit on the back of the cab to watch, our feet restin on a Coleman cooler. I liked the vintage tractor pulls the best. The work horse team pulls were also fun. MC still has a fair.I am in Columbus GA now and the state fair is the big deal but many counties still hold one.Once again, thanx for the pics.Chuck Slive, work, build, ...better with wood

Thanx for taking the time to do this wonderful thread.
You're welcome.
Many of our urban BT brothers don't get to have the simple pleasures of a county fair.
Plymouth county is blessed with one of the better county fairs in the state.
The Clay County Fair (about 1 hour away) is practically a state fair and runs for 10 days.
But we have a nice fair, it's cheap entertainment and the whole county pulls together to pull it off.

When I saw my first rodeo ( at this fair) I had always assumed that there was an antagonist relationship between the riders and the animals. I always thought the animals didn't like being rode.
What becomes very obvious once you see a rodeo is that these animals are athletes who know what the game is and they enjoy playing the part. Most of the bulls throw their riders and then quietly go to their gate like a running back returning to the sidelines.
At on of the rodeos the announcer was the owner of the stock animals, so he gave alot of info on each animal. One of the bucking broncs was a 27 year old mare. He sadi all of her offspring were good bucking horses. It's like watching a sheepdor of a hunting dog work.
My german shorthair hunting dog is completely in his element when he hunts and I suspect these animals just love to throw cowboys.

We have always had blacks, hispanics and indians in Sioux City about 25 miles away.

We have larger number of black guys and white women.
We have a alot of Hispanics. 10 X what we had even 10 years ago.

The fair is geared toward the farm community and not many Hispanics are in farming.

The fair always used to bring in a big name performer on Thur night for the grandstand.

Holy smoke, those rigs must be fairly high dollar items. Farmers must either be making a lot of money or they're in a lot of debt, then there's the cost of fuel and maintenance in case there's any loose change rattling around. That piece of equipment with the 6' tall wheels, that say's "Demco" "1050" on the back, what is it's function?
Edited 8/1/2009 11:56 am by woodway
woodway
It's a grain wagon.
It is only used to haul harvested grain out of the field.
Sometimes back to the farm and sometimes from the combine back to a semi at the field entrance.
Rich
Thanks for the information. Looks like that county fair would be a fun side trip to take. Locally that kind of thing, tractor pulls and farm equipment demonstrations, disappeared from county fairs 35 years ago. I would like to see them return but our county fair now is nothing but a shadow of what it use to be, it's essentially dried up and gone the way of many other fair memories, they're just not relevant to today's local lifestyle. To me, what's the point of having a county fair unless there's livestock showing, tractors and various carnival rides to wait in line for. Without that, well... they just aren't the same.
woodway

I have Sunday night (the rodeo) at the fair to post yet.
I'll get around to it.
I'm glad you replied to woodway about farmers and money.
I am not directly involved in farming and it is a tough question to answer. City folk don't appreciate how much money and risk is involved in farming.
The big are getting bigger around here, but I still see alot of small to medium operations making a go of it. But it's changing fast.
Rich
"Holy smoke, those rigs must be fairly high dollar items. Farmers must either be making a lot of money or they're in a lot of debt..."
Some of both. Farms are getting bigger and bigger all the time, so they can spread the machinery costs over a lot of acres.
"That piece of equipment with the 6' tall wheels, that say's "Demco" "1050" on the back, what is it's function? "
It's a grain cart, not a grain wagon. They typically stay in the field and buffer grain coming out of the combine. They help keep the combine in the field and moving, so it isn't waiting for trucks to show up.
I talked about them at length in the farming picture thread. I can find a link if ya want me to.
Back Up My Hard Drive? How do I Put it in Reverse?
Thanks for the info Boss...enjoy your picture blogs too. I've never worked on a farm so it's enlightening to get a quick view into another life. Since we're talking machinery costs (maintenance, fuel, equipment size, and acreage) it would seem to me there must be some math algorithm that would optimize crop potential yield with acreage and the equipment used on that acreage. Of course you would have to factor in whether that equipment was MF or JD or CASE or ??? You know, like the ones used to optimize the contents of cans...ie. given a certain amount of sheet metal what size can can be made to hold the maximum amount of fruit etc. Say your given a 30 acre field to harvest. There must be an optimum size piece of equipment to do a particular task on that field in the least amount of time using the minimum quantity of fuel. Harvester 'A' with say a 16 foot front would do it in X amount of time using Y fuel while harvester 'B' with a 32 foot front end would do it in X2 time using Y2 fuel. Factoring in time and fuel you could determine which machine to use to harvest the field with the least fuel in the best optimum time. Wait...I think I'm getting a headache.
I'm afraid there are no math algorithms that can tell you what size equipment you need. Things vary so much from one farm to another it's impossible to tell. You could come up with a rough idea based on acreage. But other factors have to be considered. Like are your fields close together or spread out? How many different crops do you raise? How much help will you have for planting and harvest? Do you farm full time or only part time? Some guys use a grain cart to speed up harvest so they don't need a 2nd combine. Others don't want the extra expense, so they dump directly in trucks. If you aren't doing well it doesn't matter how much equipment you need - You get by with what you have and what you can afford. If you have the money, the sky is the limit.I know that's no much of an answer. But asking how much equipment a guy needs is kinda like asking how much a car costs - There just isn't an easy answer.

The 4-H hog barns. For the city guys 4-H clubs are in every township (36) and the kids have projects that they do throughout the year and then they show at the fair. Some kids do calves, some hogs, sheep, rabbits, goats, sewing, woodworking ect.
But the emphasis is on the animals and ag related stuff.

In the sheep barn. Minutes before I snapped this picture the one sheep was trying to drag the black feeding troughs down from the shelf. Very funny.

The biggest food stand at the fair. That is the king and the queen is in the blue dress. Very reasonable prices for all food at the fair. Ice cream cone $1. Hamburger at the the 4-H stand was $1.50. My cream puff at the bakery was $1. My pork loin sandwich was $2.25.

The cheap games. When my boys were 8-10 years old and old enough to come out to the fair alone, they lost all their money in one afternoon down this alley. But they almost won some really neat stuff.

This is the talent show. The winners can move on to state. This building is all ICF, walls and ceiling. It's the only heated/AC display building on the grounds. Serves as the tornado shelter too. wedding receptions and auctions are done here.
In mid December we have a winter parade that ends at the fair grounds. The Pioneer Village is open and horse draw teams offer sliegh rides. This building has the festival of trees and various groups come to sing carols. Open on the weekend evenings.

Back to one of the commercial buildings. I noticed these plywood box beams (with purlins) for the 1st time this year.

I think this will cost you some money. Face painting was probably free.

Grain augers on display. Woodway, the semi or trucks come from the field and then dump into the hopper of these augers that then auger the grain up to the top of a grain bin or corn dryer.

OK i have a couple of minutes so I'll try to post a couple of pics.
After leaving the augers I run past the log cabin and the toy collectors building. This is the train depot. Model train guys have a beautiful set up in there. Sorry no pics of the inside. They were closed.

Wandering down a side street of the village from the augers to the Pioneer Village stage. This is a country/ rock group

The village stage usually has local and regional groups. Some paid some not. I believe they were called the Dalton family, but they used to come every year to the fair. Very talented family and they put on a good show. Now they have theri own show down in Branson MO.
Now back to more pics of the wood models in the next post.

I was able to see all the pictures by right-clicking on them and selecting "view image". Then when I hit the back button that picture would show up in the thread. I think the site where your pictures are stored doesn't allow direct linking. So they show up automatically for you, but not for everyone else.

Some are showing up for people and some are not.
Tonight the 1st time I did a picture it showed up.
Next time even I got red X in a box.
I don't know what to think.
I will have to go to Picasa help for answers. a search will usually provide and answer.
