I am going to be mounting a wall air conditioner and am wondering if anyone has any advice concerning placement. Since cold air is heavier would it make more sense to place it higher on the wall? I have noticed that some favor placing the unit lower, under a window. Will the lower placement affect the cooling capability? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance. Bill

To prevent moisture buildup and improve performance, install a continuous air barrier—such as drywall or specialized membranes—under tongue-and-groove boards or other interior wall paneling.

As I understand it higher is better for cooling. The efficiency of the unit goes up dropping the temperature on warmer air and the warmer air tends to rise. Arranging for shade where to unit sticks out on the outside will also help. Just don't block any air flow in your attempt at providing shade.
I read that smart folks try to place these units on north side of the building as it tends to be cooler. This makes it easier for the unit to dump the heat collected from inside.
I have heard that in-wall units are placed under windows because headers already exist over the window. You also have existing outlets down low. Easy way out but not the most efficient. I'd say go high.
The fan is strong enough that it really doesn't matter. Place it where installation is easiest, you can get power, and you won't bump anyone's head outside.
