I am installing a wall furnace in a 2×6 wall instead of a 2×4 wall is it ok to put some 2 inch rigid insulation beetween the furnace and exterior wall? The instructions dont mention any clearance requirements for the backside.

I installed a wall furnace and mine could be flush mounted up against the wall. Or in your case rigid insulation. Check your owners manuel for details or if you don;t have one and its an older wall furnace, go on line to the manufactuer to be sure.
I recently installed a 35k BTU "blue flame" vent-free heater in a job i am working on for temp heat. It said that it could be flush mounted against a wall (although i was sceptical/cautious). I leave the thing running for 9 hours a day and the back doesnt get hot at all. the sides are barely warm - the top a little more. Nothing that would cause you a problem - though.
