I am helping a friend enclose an outdoor patio… about 14 X 8. We are in Los Angeles. Since there are problems running a duct to this area, I am curious about some sort of small gas powered wall unit for heat. Can anyone recommend an energy efficient unit… and maybe even one that looks good as well? Is there such a thing as a small heat pump? Any innovative solutions out there? Thanks in advance.

How bout a direct vent gas fireplace?

Well, regular window/thru-wall AC unit with heat pump, ductless AC/heat pump, etc. In terms of gas heat, probably your best bet is to just install a gas fireplace. There are various gas "wall furnaces" and space heaters, but they're mostly stuff you'd put in an Arkansas shack, not an LA home.
