Old log tongs ( horse, mule type) or Ice Tongs.
Short version of my quest is about an un-limited supply of RR ties. And moving them.
I hate ebay, I stay away from it. If you find some, add a reasonable mark-up for your time/effort. I will make good. Just ask Slateman, he helped me that way.
Either a two-person wood handle, or maybe a tractor hook up. I think I am getting an old Farmall tractor, but no 3pt hitch, or PTO in the rear..it will be for mowing and dragging stuff.
So check your yard sales and falling down barns. Thanks.

You can buy new logging tools and equipment. I will probably be less expensive, you know what you're getting and it's condition. I wouldn't grab a timber with my ice tongs unless I was standing way back, way, way back.

Yeah, but I kinda like the old tools. They are actually ( IMO) better. I have enough cheap , crappy steel around the place. If I could afford it, I'd send it all back to China.Parolee # 40835
good luck - lots of old nasty stuff around too -
here's a place with selection and no crap -

Neato..they gots snake tongs too. Something tells me they kinda go together? LOLParolee # 40835
BTW, speaking of tongs, no not in tongues. I have put your old roofing tongs to good use. Cut off the depth stops, and ground the jaws truer. Next I am gonna weld some jaw pads of new steel inside them.
Thats why I like old tools...tey already have character, and in the case of the roof tongs, I thank YOU when I use them..kinda karmic or sumpthin. Like the pebble in the pond, your rings, touch copper roofs in KY. due to your generosity. Just think, you played a part in a 4+ Million$ barn at 3 Chimneys Horse farm. Cool huh?Parolee # 40835

glad to hear you're fired up and attacking some capital improvements -
kinda the same here - I'm trying hard to get the window unit for the south wall of the kitchen constructed and installed - picture window with casements on either side - shop built the unit, I've got it disassembled and oiled (walnut frame) cleared the area in the house down to naked studs with plywood sheathing showing - gotta support the roof, tear out the studs, rebuild the wall integrating the unit such that everything works out elegantly inside and out -
been a lot more head scratching than hammer weilding on this one -

I'll check with my bro in law later today. They are late risers on Sunday. He used to have some that my dad left when they bought the place. I'm not promising anything. He may have gotten rid of them. Might have a track level too if you want to go a little farther and lay some rail on your ties.

I'll take some better ones in the morning to put up tomorrow nite.

Ain't that a sweet thing! Exactly what I am after. Lets lean on the fence and spit, while we haggle $ ( G)."you are dead a lot longer than you are alive"Noah Aaron MacKenzie, 1990.
No need to haggle- you pay to ship it and you own it baby!!
I can sweeten the deal a little ...
I just sent off a 190.00$ tool vest to Basswood for a steal, so, I'll continue the pay it forward scheme Nikkiwood and I started..or was it Splintie for the vise? Anyway..ya still gots my addy?
I have a new Email Spheramid at Dishmail dot net.
I decided I am not getting the tractor, it needs too much work for me be fuddling with, so a pioneer type is better anyway. Now if I can get Gunner on the other handle...LOL"you are dead a lot longer than you are alive"Noah Aaron MacKenzie, 1990.
Back in an earlier life I scored a deal on RR ties, too.
Got in touch with an old buddy from high school that had reached some exec job with the RR. He tells me they sub the removal and disposal out - and gave me the guy's cell number.
A coupla months later, a track was being tore up close by and the guy calls me with this offer: 1600 ties bound and strapped in groups of 20, delivered and stacked where I wanted - for 3 grand.
They found themselves behind a ridge in the back woods. The forklift dozed the path for the road going to get them. As I sold them off for $5 a piece, the customers simply had to back up down that path.
Duane,
Just got back from Northern Maine working on a BPOE building.
Here are some daylight shots of this item. I thought I could just send the metal pieces and you could find a nice piece of hornbeam or such for the wooden part.
Whats your physical address- I can UPS it out in the next few days.
Walter
very sweet - if the wood is still in good shape it should be kept together - but whatever - love old tools, particularly hand made ones -
"there's enough for everyone"
David,
I see your point, but this handle is not really remarkable and I doubt it's original to the iron. My thought was to reduce shipping cost- then make a stronger, more functional handle in KY.
Walter
Excellent Walter. Either way, handle or not I will be more than happy. Guess what? I snapped that Petxo slate ripper last week. I know, stupid. I was prying a little more than it liked.
Anyway..I'll email you through here, I don't know if I still have your email in my old address book that AOL ate.
Thanks man..
I'll try to weld the ripper soon as I get something else to weld, to make digging out the welder worthwhile....it hid in a corner of the shop and won't easily come out o play. But if ya see another ebay deal..let's try it again."you are dead a lot longer than you are alive"Noah Aaron MacKenzie, 1990.
piece of hornbeam
I've heard that term before but what does it mean, or what is it?
Doug
Hornbeam is a species of tree - Ostrya virginiana -
"...30% stronger than white oak and 46% more elastic..." (Deam)
suitable for handles and wedges and such -
commonly called Ironwood - relatively small trees -
"there's enough for everyone"
Thanks David, where do they grow? I assume out east? Never heard of a hornbeam tree.
Doug
"Nova Scotia to Manitoba, south to the Gulf States, and west to Texas....It prefers well drained dry soil, and is most frequent when it is associated with beech and sugar maple, altho it is often quite plentiful in white oak woods. It is shade enduring and is one of the under trees in the forest where it grows very tall and slender and free from branches. When it grows in exposed places, as on bluffs, it retains its side branches and is usually bushy.....Since is grows neither large or fast, it is usually regarded as a weed tree...." (Deam - Trees of Indiana)
there are several in our woods - the grain/appearance of the wood is unremarkable, light colored - burns real well....
"there's enough for everyone"
Doug,
David has given you a more detailed and thorough run down than I would have.
Excellent wood for handles, long poles, wiffle trees - any item where strength is desired.
Walter
un-limited supply of RR ties
So what is it that you're up to now?
Meaning what is the plan for the RR ties?
be gotta know just cause I'm knowsy
-Thoreau's Walden
Well, I had to move the garden(s) from the woodsy side yard to out front ,full sun. So being as they are raised beds I am stacking up ties.
This is final, no moving the garden again from there. It is one of those deals where ya have to live somewhere awile to get the "feel" of things before commitment. Where the garden was, was convienient for watering, but too shaded.
Now I got 150' of hose to reach way out to where the sunshines.
New buddy says..."how many ya want?" LOL, I'm like you..."all of them"."you are dead a lot longer than you are alive"Noah Aaron MacKenzie, 1990.
oh.
I was thinking perhaps there was a new configuration to that triangular deal you mumbled something about a couple years back.
be fishing as an angle anglerI began to occupy my house on the 4th of July, as soon as it was boarded and roofed, for the boards were carefully feather-edged and lapped, so that it was perfectly impervious to rain, but before boarding I laid the foundation of a chimney at one end, bringing two cartloads of stones up the hill from the pond in my arms. -Thoreau's Walden
In the never ending cycles of change in Sphere-dumb, the garage is next, as a temp shop, while then turning attn. to the Sphere-shop. Where the Garage then can actually be a garage. And the shop is no longer in the front parlor. What the hell is a parlor anyway? I got one...full of tablesaw, planer, sanders, Bandsaw, jointer, router table, drill press...must be a tool parlor."you are dead a lot longer than you are alive"Noah Aaron MacKenzie, 1990.
This...
I understand.I built the chimney after my hoeing in the fall, before a fire became necessary for warmth, doing my cooking in the meanwhile out of doors on the ground, early in the morning: which mode I still think is in some respects more convenient and agreeable than the usual one. -Thoreau's Walden
