Want to pour a slab over a damp basement dirt floor

I can’t figure out why its damp. Its only in an area of about 40 sq ft. Can I just put a waterproof membrane underneath the slab? I thought about adding a couple inches of gravel because it would conduct water.

Consider whether you need to tile it and add a gravity drain or sump pump.
The damp section could be a number of things. 6mil plastic is the standard moisture barrier. Gravel or a gravel bed and a slab over it you need a barrier.
Are you saying that there's a 40 sq. foot area within a larger crawlspace that's damp? If so, I'd be conserned. There could be a leaky water or sewer pipe under there.
Damp area
Good point about there being a leaky pipe. I better do some digging. One person thought it might even be a spring.
