Prescriptive codes don't address the connection at less common angles, so base the connection off more typical ones using bolts, structural screws, blocking, and steel tension ties.

Yeah, Kramer Construction up here in Eureka has a roll-off with three dumpsters included for $10,500. You'll need a 3/4 ton to tow it. 707-444-2919. Good condition too.
Thanks for the reply. I'm actually looking for a dumping trailer, like a Big-Tex or similar, not a roll off.
Thanks again, though.

There's a trailer dealer in San Jose at 880 and 101. They have several sizes visible from the freeway.
Thanks, Dave. Got a name or web link?
Is it FJM on Industrial?

No names or links - I just always see them when I'm going to the cabinet supply store I use. They're in the NE quadrant of the 880/101 intersection, but I don't know where their entrance is located.Next time I'm up that way, I'll try to get a name and phone #, ok?
Thanks. From Google it looks like it might be FJM. They seem to be selling "Iron Panther" dumping trailers, which I haven't seen before. I see a lot of "Big-Tex" dumpers, any thoughts?
k
Yeah, that's the place. (Ain't Google's satellite view neat? - lol)A couple of friends have "Big-Tex" dump trailers, and they seem pretty good to me. I've borrowed them a few times.
That's the brand I always see at the x-fer station- I don't really know too much about them.
Any of your buddies selling? If not, where'd they buy theirs?
k
None of my friends trailers are for sale, and I have no idea where they bought them - they've had them for several years.I saw that that trailer place had used trailers so you might call and see what they have.

Wow. Thanks, David. I was on CL yesterday, must have been looking in the wrong category.
That might be exactly what I want.
And a bobcat too, hmmm....thanks!
k
You can carry the Bobcat in the bed of the trailer.
I wonder how it is with the new diesel regs.

P.S. for another thread, what code(s) is Oregon under? Specifically Eugene.
You mentioned a transfer station. The transfer station we use most often has a couple different unloading spots, depending on wether you unload by hand or can back up to the edge and dump, and get the heck out of there quickly.
The reason I'm saying all this is a few years ago I shopped and shopped for a dump trailer for our remodelling business, but the 3-5k price range at the time stopped me from pulling the trigger.
Then I accidentally learned about tilt bed trailers. I bought a brand new 5x10' tilt bed flatbed trailer with stake pockets for...I think the trailer itself was a little over 1k - I had an electric brake controller, trailer hitch and wiring socket all professionally added to my van at the same time - anyways, the entire investment, trailer and equipment for the van was I think about 1800.
I built a 3' high box from plywood and 1x and it serves me well. Back up to the edge at the transfer station pull the pin by hand and can litterally lift 2k lbs of debris with one hand and not spill the coffee from the other and be out of there in a matter of minutes.
And, since I have so little invested, I don't mind if it sits unused for months at a time.
Don't get me wrong. I still lust after a real dump trailer. They are better, no question. But if your primary need is for disposal, and your transfer station is set up to accommodate tilt beds (my tires have to be within a foot of the edge of the platform we dump off of) you might consider a tilt bed instead.
The main one I go to is just a flat slab in an open shed. No tip ledges or containers.
Thanks for the thoughts though, under different circumstances, that'd be something to consider.
k
spend a few hours sitting up at your dump and ask the guys that roll in towing how they like what they have and where they bought it.
Welcome to the Taunton University of Knowledge FHB Campus at Breaktime. where ... Excellence is its own reward!
Yeah, I've heard personal reviews of the Big-Tex brand, they were very positive. I've just never tried to research it objectively.
k
I just bought a 7x14 dump trailer.
I looked at Big-Tex, PJ, Carson, Titan, H&H, and Travalong.
H&H just went outta bizness, and their structures looked cheesy compared to the other brand.
Carson trailers didn't look much better.
The PJ and Titan looked ok, except they had a single piston, instead of a scissor lift/hoist. The PJ and Titans also had wimpy jacks, instead of a higher rated drop leg jack.
I went with a Travalong for a few reasons. Std options included, 12K# drop leg jack, lower deck height (24"vs 34"), Power down, Load jacks, and scissor hoist.
If you buy a trailer with just a single piston, be very careful about loading it evenly from side to side. Overloading one side will damage the lift mechanism, or attachment point.
Also verify the track record of the pump manufacturer. A few years ago, Titan was using a pump that would fail prematurely.
Look at as many trailers as you can. Check out the structures underneath the bed. It is pretty easy to disinguish the heavy duty from the cheap just by lookin at the size of the steel members, and the on center spacing of supports.
Hope this helps, for all I know, none of these brands are available in yout neck of the woods.
Thanks for the pointers, lettusbee.

If you are into auctions, there is a really big auction company just off I-5 in Dunnigan that usually has some dump trailers. You can check their inventory on their website (there are some end-dump trailer's listed but it takes going through several of their web pages to find them):

Huh. I'll have to explore that. Looks like a lot of heavy equipment, but maybe I'll find the pickup-towable ones. Lemmee scratch a little deeper on that site...
thanks.

You might try your area's craigs listings in Farm/Garden. I visit Chico's thread there quite often and if you can get around all the horses and goats, there's quite a bit of good stuff there. Heck, I found my new little rescue border collie there (free)!
Thanks darcy,
I guess you were right about farm and garden being the right category, davidmeiland linked me up. I'd been looking on cl in the wrong places.
k
Glad I could help! Good luck there...
Edit: PS. If you end up buying up here, please stop by and say hello. Lunch, whatever...

Thanks for the invite. On your profile it says you are a k-12 (LOL) student. Why do I feel like I'm being set up for a hidden camera?
k
Nope, not K-12. That's just for fun. We live on the Worm Farm/Ranch in Durham.
Worm farm? Now I am interested. How do they taste?
k
Delicious!
Iffn' you're a fish!
I bought a used EZ Dumper dump trailer off Craigs List about two years ago. They were hot then and nobody was dealing. Since then, I see various brands on Craigs List in Sacaramento for a lot less than what I paid.
A few things that I have experienced with my 6'8" X 12' trailer are:
- side boards are your friends. You can cube out up with remodel debris long before you will overload it.
-Ramps are your friends. Appliance dollies, wheel barrows, walking up to load your trash....
-Scissor lift with a single piston is regarded as a better lift from what I've read, but the two pistons on mine have worked well.
-No matter what people tell you, you HAVE to hook up your brake system with a controller. I almost caused a wreck when I didn't have good contact on my trailer plug. Scared the the absolute ##### out of me that day. Working brakes are your BEST friend.
- I had a mesh tarp made up for mine for about a $100. That and several handfulls of bungee cords make for stress-free highway travel. CHP will nail your hide to the wall if trash blows out of your trailer around here.
-watch where you park it, I've had friends who had their trailers used as public dumpsters. We pay about $40/ ton around here. Civic duty only goes so far I'm afraid.
-I wired my battery charge wire with an automatic reset circuit breaker. I found that the factory fuse would blow out when I ran the dump motor. A local electrical shop told me that they always set up trucks that way for high draw loads.
-Once you buy one and use it for one week, you will wonder why you didn't buy one years ago.
Now, gotta convince DW that I need a flat bed trailer.....Oh and a bigger truck....It's a slippery slope I tell ya.
My name is Frank and I have a trailer addiction.
Thanks for the feedback, fm. Seems like a good time to buy trucks, trailers, you name it. If you'll have a use for them any time soon.
k
where are you located, anyways?
Edited 12/6/2009 10:30 am by KFC
I'm in Woodland.
I was on CL Sacramento last night and saw several for sale. Some looked pretty tough. On the other hand, they are for running to the dump. A new one will look tough after a few years anyway.
I would agree with one of the other poster's comments about the Carson brand. I looked at a few different new models several years ago and they looked like they had been slapped together in a backyard shop. Not much attention to finish and detail. The design was pretty cheesy.
A friend bought a Snake River trailer about a year ago and it looked pretty good. The local dealer here is good, but pricey.
I would lean the used route on a trailer if you can look it over and know what to look for. Welded patches, cracked paint, twisted metal frames, bent axles, loose wheel bearings, broken lights......The list goes on.
I'll keep an eye out in this area for a good used one if you'd like. Let me know what your spec's are.
Frank
Thanks a bunch. I'm definitely leaning towards used, but in good condition. Seems like in this economy a deal should be out there if I'm patient.
I do a lot of different stuff, so it would have to do double duty- sometimes taking 5000 lbs of fill and debris, sometimes taking 6 cu yards of assorted remodel garbage. I guess stake pockets would let me build up the sides as needed.
Parking and access can be a little tight around here, so I'm a little concerned about a real big one. David Meiland posted a link to one that looks pretty good, actually, but is 14' long. That could be an issue from time to time. I was imagining 6x10 or so, maybe with a 6000 lb payload.
Thanks for the help.

HI FRANK!
Will travel?

Anything's possible, I guess. I'll shop locally for a while, then broaden my search. Thanks for keeping an eye out.k

try using this a few came up. put in your zipcode and the distance your willing to travel. 6x10x2 was $3339
try calling the local rental yards and ask. Some are always getting rid of stuff and now might be the time.
