Monday morning in the lumberyard is, for me, the best time to be there because the handyman types were there on the weekend and have selected what I think is the best framing lumber and tossed it aside for me. Saves me a lot of time.
I’m talking about the wany wood. When I go through a pile of studs, that’s what goes on my truck.
As long as there’s enough flat to land drywall and sheathing on, that’s what I think is the best wood in the yard. I do avoid the sticks which were sawn at an angle to the side of the trunk of the tree so they are tapered. They tend to be less stable than the sticks whose sides are evenly waned. Perhaps that’s because they are likely to come from shorter more tapered trees which have probably grown in more difficult locations, therefore, more stresswood.
However, wany sticks are almost always straight in the plane that matters. They are very stable and seldom twist as they dry. What else could I ask for?
On the other hand, a lot of studs especially those which contain both heart and sapwood will twist and bow amazingly as they dry from the 18%mc or so of KD lumber to the 6%mc or so in the finished house. Even worse are the sticks that contain the pith, unless it’s dead centre. Result: screw pops, callbacks, money out the window.
This is a secret I don’t share with just anybody. I want this stuff for myself. Keep it quiet.

Hmmmmmmm ?
Essentially perfectly flatsawn sapwwood. This would definately have a tendency to bow ( Who cares after it's fastened ) but would be very unlikely to twist or crown as it dries.
I like it ! Definately a new way to look at the econo stud pile.
The rain in Spain is mainly in the wane.

If you keep talking like that, the mills will start putting out more of it and charging a premium.

you forgot to mention, that when a stick as so much wane, it wieghs less. Think of that for a moment, all those studs picked up in a day, wany wood wieghs less. You're back wont hurt as much, Think of how much that adds up to in a week, month, a year, even an entire carreer.!
No splinters either off those nice soft round edges.
