Hello everyone
I have purchased a water heater from HD, and I have noticed that the water tank is already insulated with a layer of fiber glass.I am wondering if I should use a extra blanket for insulation.
Thanks for any input!
P.S:Can anyone explain me what is BTU stands for?

Yes, you should add more insulation, but only if you want to save the added money.
BTU = British Thermal Unit. It's a method of measuring the amount of heat that is created by a device. By comparing BTU's produced to energy usage, you can get an idea of relative energy efficiency among various brands.

thank you very much!
I'm so cheap I built a box around the WH with R19 around it.
A BTU (British Thermal Unit) is the term for the amount of heat needed to raise the temp of water 1 deg F, from about 39 F to 40 F (I'm not precise here).
1 kW-hr = 3413 (or 3412 depending on specs/rounding) BTUs.
Thank you very much!
Is this a gas fired water heater? If so, be VERY careful about adding extra insulation so you DO NOT:A - have the insulation blanket near the flue pipe
B - cover any of the openings that allow combustion air in to the burner.BTW, a BTU (British Thermal Unit) is the amount of energy required to raise the temperature of one pound of water, one degree fahrenheit.
