I need to install a backup sump pump on my house. I have seen both the battery operated and water powered (using city water pressure) type. I like the idea of no battery maintenance or periodic replacement but I would like the opinions of anyone out there (a plumber maybe) who has has experiences with both! I am worried about the volume of water the whimpy battery pumps move as well as how long the battery can really last. Thanks

The battery pumps can move a larger volume of water (probably about 4 times what a water powered unit can move), but obviously have a limited operating time. Your decision would have to depend in part on what "scenario" you want to protect against. Keep in mind that you can always have a larger battery or more batteries if you want protection for a longer period.
The battery should last 3-5 years & shouldn't require any maintenance other than keeping it clean & possibly checking electrolyte level occasionally.
