I own a modest home just north of New York City, which was built in 1954. The house was built using ½” sweat type copper plumbing. When we moved in I noticed loud (and I mean loud) banging coming from the pipes when we used the dishwasher, washing machine and even the toilets. I purchased a water pressure gauge for Home Depot and found the water pressure was over 120 lbs. I installed a new pressure regulator, which certainly fixed the pipe banging.
The pressure regulator is factory preset to 50lbs. This seems to be a bit low and I would like to increase the pressure. Is 75 – 90 lbs of pressure OK? What should the average water pressure be? Also the pressure gauge I purchased at Home Depot is a piece of junk. Any suggestions as to where I can purchase a decent pressure gauge?
Thank you in advance for your help.
