I’m installing tile in a tub surround using Dens-Shield as the substrate. I’ll also be using a waterproofing membrane (UltraCure 971, liquid plus fabric) on all horizontal seams and vertical joints. Should I still use mesh tape and thinset on the horizontal seams? This seems redundant. Also, would the same treatment apply to transitions between drywall and Dens-Shield?

Paul,
The purpose of the tape isn't waterproofing the substate, but rather to lock the sheets together.
I would recommend using thin set to set your tile and simply bed your tape at the same time.
