I know you guys know how to do this. How’s about you share with me. Will be adding deck to new construction after stucco (stucco paper, chicken wire, scratch coat and then finish coat). How do we attach ledger to prevent damage to the stucco and also prevent any water infiltration?

*How bout a ledger and flashing before the stucco? Joe H
*Jim,May be they make a harder stucco up where you are, but down here in Texas from what I have seen, I would be more than a little bit leery about going over existing stucco with a ledger. Quite frankly, it does look as if it would hold up to the stresses without being damaged somewhere down the road. Mind you I usually get to see the "stuff" after it's had its better day and is cracked and crumbly, but it certainly "puts me off" on this idea. Personally I'd want to get down to something more substantial.Good luck,Cliff.
*If you were to attach a ledger to framed construction you would flash over the ledger then apply the siding. See Pro-Deks' thread in the Photo Gallery. You could do the same thing with stucco since you haven't yet applied the stucco. Firmly attach the ledger to the structure. Flash over the 2X and then up the wall about 5-6", lap the house wrap or felt over that. Could also use a strip of ice and water over the flashing before the felt for added insurance. A little polyurethane caulk at the ends of the ledger wouldn't hurt either. Bottom of the ledger should also be sealed. You could rout in a drip break as is found under window sills to keep the water from flowing toward the wall as well as bend some flashing into a saw kerf the full length of the underside of the ledger then back to the stucco. After all the flashing then apply the wire and screeds and spread that jello. You say chicken wire but did you mean expanded metal lath? There are a variety of screeds you could use including one that is a combination screed and door and window drip. It look like F channel but has an additional wide flap below the screed that is designed to shed water over the thickness of door or window trim. You could use that over your ledger in addition to the other flashing since you need a screed there anyhow for a proper edge on the stucco. Check out the stuff at http://www.flannerytrim.comIf you want more, check out the flashing details for EIFS and the water channeling procedures used just in case.
