Some time ago I read an article on putting a driveway which talked about poisoning the ground to prevent weeds. What was used to poison the soil was never mentioned. Does anyone know what product is best and any possible down side to using the product? I hope to use it around my foundation to prevent weeds coming up under a porch. I would really appreciate any help.

You want a persistent soil sterilizer/total vegetation killer like Ortho Triox.
The hazard is that you may poison stuff you didn't mean to, including yourself.
Keep in mind that such a herbicide only persists for a year or two -- it won't prevent grass from growing through cracks eventually.
I once lived in a subdevelopment that had a vacant lot that had not yet been built upon. This in North Carolina. This lot abutted mine and a neighbors, and nut grass would grow in the vacant lot, invading our two yards. We decided to use Ortho Triox in that lot, since it would inhibit plant growth for at least three years, according to its label. Killed everything. The next year a house was built on the lot and bought by a college professor. He seeded the yard, but the grass wouldn't grow -- only some noxious weeds. We never told him, but he owned a Saab. Seemed even to us.
