Hey Guys, When I move into my home the old well still worked just at the hose bib (well thats all its hooked up to). The pressure has gone low and when its starts up there is some discoloration for some time. I really dont want to lose it becouse I plan on installing a irrigation system. I dont know too much about wells, except the obvious. Can anyone help me here.
Thanks fellas, Lou

How deep is the well? Into rock or just down to bedrock?
Is it set up with a pressure tank? Bladder style?
The pressure may be easy to fix by just an adjustment of the pressure switch.
This may have more to do with the water system than just the well. Could you describe the rest of it and whether you have a submersible pump or not?

Yeah, you need to "characterize" the system better. Presumably there's a pump somewhere -- is it down in the well (wires running into the well head) or in the basement or a pit or some such? How many pipes run into the well head?
Is there a pressure tank? (Usually there is.) How old does the tank look and how big is it? Any markings? (A fairly large tank -- maybe 3 feet round and 3.5 feet tall -- generally indicates an old fashioned non-bladder tank. A smaller tank is generally the newer bladder type. The bladder type will usually have a tire valve on top.)
Can you find the pressure switch that controls the pump? Is there maybe a pressure gage there as well?
