I will be removing a set of double exterior doors and reinstalling them in a new house. Homeowner has ask if the doors can be refinish or refreshed, the doors are over forty years old, cover by a porch,it appears that no finish was applied to the doors. these doors are custom made 3 1/2in thick with 1×12 planks over a frame. There is some discoloring and worn places as well as cracks homeowner wants to keep to the cracked boards. I thought about replacing the outer skin with some boards that will be removed the the old house that is in good shape. Also the doors has a lot of little stars made of metal and screwed on. Thank you for your suggestions and help terry

nothing does exterior wr cedar better than sikkiens, remove the hardware and sand 'er down ..
A few months back FWW did a article on a test of several finishes for outdoor use. They finished several types of wood and left them for a year in varying parts of the country. Might want to check that out.
You might look to some of the log home finish products. Sikkens had a two step system with one part that filled gaps well and the other part that provided a more durable surface finish.
I'd sand down things until the worst areas look right, get the colors to even out with a thin stain or deck wash, cover with the sikkens.
LMAO.
