Just look at what you want to use it for. which tools or applications. let the tool ratings set the parameters of your purchase.
Unless you plan to take it to a job on occasion you can't get one too big, especially if you intend to spray anything with it. I have a good sized portable compressor that occasionally will blow a 15a circuit. You need at least a 20a circuit at 120v preferably a dedicated circuit. This is especially important if you plan to leave it turned on. Buy the biggest compressor you can support electrically.
