I’ve been on my first cell phone for a while now and know that it isn’t what I want.
I carry my phone in my pocket so I would like a flip phone. I like the idea that it can’t dial and the phone is hung up when I close it.
I want something that is reliable. Right now my cell isn’t ringing right or at all.
It would be nice to have bigger buttons that are highly visible. I’m 52 and my eyes aren’t that good. Do they make an old fart phone? Now there’s a market!
Range isn’t a big issue because I’m in town but it is an issue when I’m out hunting down stuff. I think we have pretty good coverage where we are located.
Any recommendations?

I got a Motorola flip-phone when I asked for the "old man" phone. Big buttons, big display, no camera, no text messages, no voicemail. This phone is capable of text and voicemail but I did not activate these features. I don't have it with me to give you a model # but it is through Alltel. The same phone is available through some of the other companies. Hope that helps.
Still lurking after all these years.
This is exactly the phone you are looking for:
Easy to use. Soft ear cushion and powerful
speaker make the sound loud and clear. Bigger,
backlit buttons and brighter text are easy to see.

I've had the Verizon GZ'ONE for a few months now and it works fine. It's a ruggedized phone made by CASIO, and stands up to most abuse a contractor can toss at it. Reception is good, as is the speakerphone also.
I have the same verizon G'ZONE phone. Its been about 6 months now, and I like it a lot. I probably had the same cell phone issues you were having, they just never lasted more than a year. My last phone was a razor, and it got wet in my tool belt one day and died. I don't beat it up on purpose. However this phone is exactly what I need. It's functional, as well as durable enough to take the day to day abuse.
Pop,
Just renewed my att contract after several hours of researching new phones. I settled on a Motorola KRZR. It's a flip, and I liked the way it feels in my hand and pocket--slightly narrower than the RAZR. Repair pro also told me it's more durable than the RAZR. I like Motorola because you can connect them to your pc for easy backup and transfer of photos and ringtones from your cd collection--I hate canned ringtones. The Jitterbug "big numbers" phone looks good if the KRZR buttons are too tight for your hands. Seems like they are phasing KRZRs out--they are about the same price as the RAZR 3vxx, popular model currently. I got mine at Wally World. You shouldn't pay more than $50.

I was wondering about price. The Jitterbug is hitting a different market so the $ 147 price is what it is. I wonder just how far their service goes at that price. I figure it should be replaced for life of the original owner. Which might be pretty short considering the market. If you look at the accesorries you can get a lanyard so you can carry it around your neck. Reminds me of the emergency button ones. I'm not that old yet! Still, if it's a good phone and the service is great?
I really do dislike my current phone. I'm going to take it out in the driveway and smass it with a hammer for all the times it's let me down. It did help find out what I don't want.

I hate to say it but I'd probably buy an apple next.
The file management system suits my bad eyes. I like and need the access to the internet 24/7 because I'm attempting to go paperless. I like that it will link up to any wifi or operate independently. I like how it automatically rotates to display the text any way you want it: portrait or landscape.

Way to fancy for me. I just want simple. If I have to spend more for good ergonomics and dependabilty i will. I miss phones that I can physicly hang up.
It's way too fancy for me too, but I've never saw one with a bigger, brighter, clearer screen. Thats my motivation. FKA Blue (eyeddevil)

The Sanyo SCP-7050 is all of what you described as looking for and some because it is the only phone rated to military specs for dust and vibration resistance. It is through Sprint. I would look into their SERO plan, do a search on Fatwallet or Slickdeals for the details.
