Excuse my ignorance but what does “proud” mean in framing terms?

It means it sticks out past flush.

Inviting the question, What does 'flush' mean?.......'in plane', or 'even'

Five of a kind all in one suit. Don't you watch Texas Hold'em?

Isn't that where the cowboy grabs the gal on the dance floor and pumps her arm like an overgrown ratchet wrench in time to the music?

            Nope, that's Texas Pump'em.

A flush is what her face looks like when she's had six shots of Tequila and did the Cotton-eyed Joe....

I though that was called the Tequila Spew....which leads up right back to that flush and not much to be proud of. Our poor OP....

"Five of a kind all in one suit."I don't know how it is in Oregon, but if you ever come up with five of a kind (especially all in one suit) in a poker game around here you're likely to get yourself shot.

If you're proud and a little shy, it can make you flush.

"If you're proud and a little shy, it can make you flush."

          Ha!  Funny!  Is that original?

            "Is that original?"On the spot.

bigger than desired - too wide, usually - standing out beyond the desired line -

    "there's enough for everyone"
    1. blownonfuel | Feb 13, 2008 08:58pm | #8

Thanks. I figured as much but thought I would ask.

    2. WNYguy | Feb 13, 2008 09:49pm | #11

"... standing out beyond the desired line ..."

Not always a negative.  It's often intentional, and can be used to good effect.  When one surface is slightly proud of another, it can be analagous to leaving a "reveal."

      Allen

      1. seeyou | Feb 13, 2008 10:23pm | #13

it can be analagous to leaving a "reveal."

        You said "analagous".

        You said "reveal".http://grantlogan.net/

"You said "analagous".  You said "reveal"."

Oops.  I meant analogous.  And reveal.  Reveal is spelled correctly, no?   Or do those two words just sound funny together?!

          Allen

          1. Piffin | Feb 14, 2008 07:24am | #27

He's tweaking the sponsors of this here program, who are given to censoring more and more werds every weak. Things like "reveal" are likely to imply revealing clothing which is close to p0rn. They don't like the werd ####ogous for the same reason. Somehow, you got away with ####ogous this time, but best watch yourself cause the autocensor gets pretty #### sometimes.

ya - if he would have asked about 'proud' associated with trim, I'd agree with you - 'proud' in regards to framing is always(?) a negative - "there's enough for everyone"

        1. brucet9 | Feb 14, 2008 03:10am | #17

" 'proud' in regards to framing is always(?) a negative"Be careful of statements containing 'always' and 'never'. Many framers leave the sill plate and top plate of an intersecting wall a little proud of the end stud to be sure of good tight fit top and bottom when they join the two walls together.

          1. DavidxDoud | Feb 14, 2008 03:27am | #23

            ya, hence the (?) - - thanks - "there's enough for everyone"

          2. JTC1 | Feb 14, 2008 03:13pm | #30

            >>sill plate and top plate of an intersecting wall a little proud of the end stud ....<<

I do, about 3/16" - sometimes get some strange looks until I explain -- then it suddenly makes sense to the "student".

This will help you remember that proud means sticking out past flush; as in Proud Mary.
