What Goes Between Tile and Radiant Heat
Some friends are wondering what should go between their radiant heat tubing (running in grooved particle board) and a tile floor. Hardibacker, a membrane, …….what’s best?
The radiant heat tubing will be covered by tile and hardwood, and getting the floor heights the same is the issue.

On our house I put in radiant much like yours, but our tubes run in aluminum panels Think they're made by Rehau (sp?).
I put a roll of rosin paper between it and the wood floor in the kitchen & family room. In the bath, I think I just screwed down the cement board and laid my tile over that.
Seems to work fine.

I have a similiar radiant arrangement and I used 1/4 hardibacker in the tiled areas, and 3/4 wood flooring and floors came out almost perfectly flush. Heat works well, although the house is efficient enough that the floors aren't particularly much of the time. House is in NH.
That's pretty much what I expected, Tom. I'll pass that along and tell them to get their flooring guys to work together so the floors come out level. Thanks
I used 1/4" hardiboard on top of my tubing imbedded in plywood. Very straight forward. The hardiboard provides a good base, it's thin to accomodate adjoing flooring.
