What has caused this problem with my 1948 stucco exterior? (see picture) And how do I fix it? I’m planning on patching it myself using DAP stucco patch but what do I do to make sure this doesn’t happen again? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!!

Hard to tell from the photo. Is it just paint peeling off or is the stucco actually crumbling back to tarpaper, metal lath or wood? Can you shoot one or two more showing the scale (include a finger or pencil) of a bad area? In my case, water got in through minute cracks as the paint became deteriorated over the years. I had to remove enough of the stucco to allow me to slip new tarpaper up under the remaining good tarpaper and tie new wire lath into the existing lath and buildup two new coats of stucco. Matching the show texture takes a bit of learning. I looked at a lot of You-tube videos. Some better than others.
