The plumber who does the repair work for our apartment complex finally solved the problem of my sink backing up. The problem was build up on the riser. What is a riser in plumbing? Is it the stack? I have no idea what it is and books I have on plumbing does not show me what it is. When this build up was cleared it also cleared up the sewer gas problem. (Which the plumber said there was nothing he could do about the sink gurgling. He was defiantly unfazed by it. )

Sounds like the vent stack to me--you may get better answers if you post on the "Breaktime" forum. I know that a riser diagram shows all the plumbing lines (at least I think that's what it is).
Thank you for your answer, I will take your advice and also ask in "Breaktime" forum.
